Hainan

A Hainan Island Circuit That Is Not Rushed

You want more of Hainan than one beach, without spending the week in a coach.

A first Hainan circuit works best with three bases: two nights in Haikou, one in Wuzhishan and three in Sanya. That leaves you with a few real sightseeing days and one properly lazy day at the sea.

If you have only seen photos of Sanya beaches, it is fair to wonder what the rest of the island offers. This route shows you the north, the rainforest and the south, without moving hotels every night.

Who is this route for?

It suits first-timers who want variety, and return visitors who have already done a pure resort week. It is a poor fit if everyone only wants to swim.

If that is your group, read the circuit versus resort comparison before you go further.

Route at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Haikou, easy evening
  • Day 2: Haikou old streets and a volcanic park
  • Day 3: travel to Wuzhishan, rainforest edge
  • Day 4: Wuzhishan morning, then on to Sanya
  • Day 5: Sanya sights, Nanshan Temple and Yalong Bay
  • Day 6: beach rest day or Wuzhizhou Island
  • Day 7: slow morning, fly home

Day by day

Day 1: Arrive in Haikou

Land, check in and keep the evening empty. Malaysia and mainland China share UTC+8, so nobody has jet lag to recover from[1].

Walk to dinner near your hotel and set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you leave the lobby. Visa, Mastercard and other major cards can be bound to both apps without a Chinese bank account[2].

Day 2: Haikou, slowly

Spend the morning in the Qilou arcades, the old shophouse streets of Haikou, where coffee and local snacks are easy to find. See our guide to Qilou Old Street for what to look at.

After lunch, rest at the hotel or visit the volcanic geopark on the edge of the city if the sky is clear. Finish early. Tomorrow is a travel day.

Day 3: Haikou to Wuzhishan

Plan most of the day for this leg, including check-out, the journey and arrival. Travel by road or rail depending on the connections for your date, and ask your agency which one their quote assumes.

In the afternoon, take a short walk near your hotel and sleep early. The rainforest is a morning place.

Day 4: Wuzhishan, then Sanya

Go to the rainforest in the cool of the morning. Trails can be wet and steps uneven, so choose a short loop and bring a light rain jacket.

Move on to Sanya after lunch. This is the second long leg, so book the hotel with an easy check-in and a restaurant on site.

Day 5: Sanya sights

Start at Nanshan Temple while the sun is still soft, then drive to Yalong Bay for the beach and the tropical forest park. Keep the evening free for a seafood dinner near your hotel.

Day 6: Rest day, or Wuzhizhou Island

Choose one. A beach day with no schedule is a fair reward after two long legs. If your group enjoys the water, Wuzhizhou Island is a good snorkelling day, but weather can cancel boats, so keep it flexible.

Day 7: Fly home

Leave a margin before the flight. Sanya’s airport sits some distance from the bay hotels, and our airport transfer guide explains how to plan the ride.

What are the travel legs really like?

There are two long moves: Haikou to Wuzhishan and Wuzhishan to Sanya. Treat each as half a day at least, not an hour on a map. If a package shows a third move, ask why.

For rail legs, passports are needed to buy tickets and pass the platform gates[3]. Tickets usually go on sale 15 days before departure, so a DIY booking needs a diary note[4].

Where should you stay?

Think in areas, not hotel names.

  • Haikou: near the old streets or the main rail station, so arrivals and departures are easy.
  • Wuzhishan: a hotel close to the rainforest road, so mornings start early without a long drive.
  • Sanya: a beach area for the last three nights. Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay or Dadonghai each suit different groups.

How do you adapt it?

  • Seniors: drop Wuzhizhou, keep both rest days and ask for ground-floor or lift access.
  • Children: use the beach morning and keep the rainforest to a short loop.
  • Halal meals: confirm what the kitchen does and ask Hui-run restaurants first, since the Hui avoid pork[5].
  • Typhoon months: Hainan is rated high risk[6], with a main season from July to September[7]. Keep Day 4 movable.

What should you book ahead?

Book flights, the first night and the Sanya hotel first. Rail tickets follow once the sale window opens. Check any agency on the MOTAC website before paying[8].

How should you budget?

Four lines matter: flights, hotels, transfers and tickets. Plug today’s quotes into the budget planner, then compare them with the package comparator.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is seven days enough for a Hainan island circuit?

Yes, if you accept three bases: Haikou, Wuzhishan and Sanya. Each move eats most of a day, so seven days gives you about four full sightseeing days. Add a fourth base and the trip turns into a coach schedule.

Should we fly into Haikou or Sanya?

Fly into Haikou and out of Sanya, or the reverse, so you never retrace the island. Open-jaw tickets (arriving and leaving from different cities) can cost more or less than a return, so ask for both quotes.

Is the circuit safe in typhoon season?

Hainan is rated high risk for typhoons, and the main season runs from July to September. Travel is still possible, but keep dates flexible, buy cover that includes weather disruption and keep the inland days movable.

Can we do this without Mandarin?

Yes, with preparation. Save each hotel name and address in Chinese, keep a translation app offline and pay by Alipay or WeChat Pay. Our team can prepare a bilingual transfer sheet for your route on WhatsApp.
