Wuzhizhou Island is a full water day off Sanya, and it works well if you plan around the weakest swimmer in the group. Start early, keep activities simple, and give everyone a break from the sun and the sea.
If you worry about children, deep water or friends with different abilities, a short plan takes away much of the stress.
Who enjoys Wuzhizhou most?
Families with school-age children and friend groups who like snorkelling will enjoy it most. Divers can add a session if they hold a recognised certificate.
It suits less well anyone who dislikes boats, crowds on a jetty or hot sun. For a quieter day, spend time on the beach at Yalong Bay.
How long do you need?
Plan a full day, with an early start and a long lunch break. Do not add another sight in the evening.
Read our Sanya itineraries for how a water day sits between rest days.
When should you go?
Pick a calm morning with a good forecast. Hainan is rated high risk for typhoons[1], and the main typhoon season is July to September, though storms can occur from May to December[2].
Choose flexible bookings in those months, and check the Sanya season and typhoon guide before paying.
How do you get there?
Book a ferry or transfer through your hotel, an agency or the official channel, and confirm the pick-up point and last return time. Google Maps and WhatsApp are blocked in mainland China[3], so save your plan offline and keep the Chinese address for a taxi.
Carry your passport in case a ticket desk asks for ID.
How do you split the group by swimming ability?
Decide the plan before you board. Strong swimmers can snorkel further out or try a diving session, while non-swimmers and small children stay with a staff member in shallow areas.
| Group | Suggested activity | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Strong swimmers | Snorkelling or a diving session | Group size, instructor language, equipment checks |
| Weaker swimmers | Shallow-water snorkelling with a vest | Vest fit, depth, staff nearby |
| Young children | Beach play, boat rides, shade | Shade, rest areas, quiet exit |
Meet at a fixed time and place, and keep a phone with a charged battery in a waterproof pouch.
What should you check before paying?
Ask who runs the activity, what the safety briefing covers and whether insurance is included. Check the refund rule for bad weather, and ask what is not in the price, such as photos, equipment hire and lunch.
Verify any local agency through proper channels before paying; MOTAC, Malaysia’s tourism ministry, advises checking an agency before you pay[4]. Use the package comparator to compare quotes side by side.
Where should you stay?
Base yourself at a resort with a short transfer to the pier, and compare areas in our kids pool and kids club guide. A quiet evening back at the resort helps tired children.
What about halal food and prayer?
Plan this carefully, since you may find little choice on a small island. Bring snacks and eat a proper meal before and after. Hui Muslims avoid pork[5], and Muslim-run restaurants in Sanya are the easiest place to start.
JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies in February 2025. Chinese halal labels cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[6]. Pray before you go and again at the resort.
When is another plan better?
If anyone is nervous in water, skip diving and choose a resort pool day. If your trip is very short, a beach day at the resort is easier.
