If you are travelling with grandparents or small children, one Sanya resort is the calmer choice. If you are a first-timer who wants to see more than a beach, the island circuit is worth the extra moving.
Families feel pulled both ways. The pool photos look wonderful, but so does the rainforest. Here is a way to decide without a long argument.
How do the two options compare?
Compare them on the same basis: pace, hotel changes, who they suit and what to watch.
| Basis | Island circuit | Sanya resort holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Moving every second day | Settled, with optional outings |
| Hotel changes | Three bases or more | One |
| Suits | First-timers, return visitors, curious teenagers | Grandparents, toddlers, couples, rest seekers |
| Watch out for | Long road legs and tired children | Boredom after three days, more time indoors in rain |
| Where the money goes | Transfers, tickets, three or more hotels | One room, meals and extras |
Who should choose the island circuit?
Choose the circuit if everyone enjoys sightseeing and can cope with a long travel day. It shows you the north, the rainforest and the south on one flight.
Our seven-day island circuit shows how to do it with two long legs only and a proper rest day.
Who should choose the resort?
Choose a resort if rest is the purpose. It also suits anyone who worries about stairs, long drives or finding halal food each evening, because meals and the pool are close by.
Read our Sanya resort holiday plan for the shape of a settled stay. If you are unsure what an all-in package covers, our guide to all-inclusive versus room only lists what to ask.
What changes with the weather?
Hainan is rated high risk for typhoons, and the main season is July to September[1][2]. Typhoons can occur from May to December, so no month is certain to be calm.
At a resort you lose a beach day, not the whole plan. On a circuit a cancelled road or rail leg can shift every night after it. If your dates fall in the typhoon months, lean towards the resort or keep the circuit short.
What should you ask any quote?
Whichever you pick, put three questions to the agency before paying.
- What is the number of hotel changes, and which days are travel days?
- Which sights are included, and which cost extra on the spot?
- What happens if a typhoon or flight change cancels a day?
Check that the agency holds a licence on the MOTAC website before you pay[3]. Use the package comparator to put two quotes side by side.
Can you combine both?
Yes. A good blend is three or four days on the island, then two or three nights at a beach hotel. See Sanya or Haikou as your base to decide where the touring should start.
The circuit chooser can narrow the options for your group, and the itineraries topic page has other routes to compare.
