Spend one night in Haikou, one in Boao, two in Wanning, one at Wuzhishan and a last night in Haikou. This is a quieter Hainan of river mouth, surf coast and rainforest, and it suits people who have already had a Sanya week.
If you liked Yunnan’s slow scenery, this route gives you a tropical version of that pace. Yunnan’s classic circuit is a useful comparison for the way we handle travel days.
Who is this route for?
It suits return visitors, couples and friends who prefer small towns to resort strips. It is a poor match for anyone who wants waterparks, a kids club or a big hotel pool.

Day by day
Day 1: Arrive in Haikou
Land and check in. Malaysia and mainland China share UTC+8, so there is no time difference to recover from[1]. Eat near the hotel and sleep early.
Day 2: Haikou to Boao
Plan most of the day for this move. Boao is a small coastal town where a river meets the sea, and the pace is deliberately slow. Walk by the water in the late afternoon and take dinner in town.
Day 3: Boao to Wanning
Allow the morning for a quiet walk, then travel on to Wanning after lunch. Do not add a sight to the journey, because road time is the main cost on this route.
Day 4: Wanning, slowly
Spend the day at the coast. Riyue Bay is known for surf, and you can watch from the sand if you do not surf. Read our guide to Hainan’s east coast for the surrounding area.
Day 5: Wanning to Wuzhishan
This is the longest leg, so leave early and carry water and snacks. Reach the hotel by late afternoon and do nothing more than walk and eat.
Day 6: Rainforest, then Haikou
Walk a short rainforest trail in the cool morning, then head back towards Haikou. Trails are wet and steps uneven, so wear shoes with grip.
Day 7: Fly home
Leave a margin for the airport. If you plan to continue to another city, tell your agency early.
What are the travel legs like?
Four moves in seven days is the maximum this route can carry. Each one uses a large part of the day. If your quote lists five or six, ask what they cut. For rail legs, you need your passport to buy tickets and pass the gates[2], and tickets usually go on sale 15 days before departure[3].
Where should you stay?
Pick a small hotel near the sea in Boao and Wanning, and one close to the forest road at Wuzhishan. In Haikou, stay near the airport or station for the first and last nights. Wanning and Riyue Bay make a quieter base than the big resort strip.
How do you adapt it?
- Seniors: drop the rainforest trail and keep the viewpoints close to the road.
- Children: split Day 5 with a long lunch stop, and let them nap on the road.
- Halal meals: look for Hui-run restaurants, since the Hui avoid pork[4], and ask about the kitchen.
- Typhoon months: Hainan is rated high risk[5], with a main season from July to September[6]. Coastal days are the first to change.
What should you book ahead?
Flights, the first Haikou night and a driver or transfers for the coastal section. Check an agency on the MOTAC website before you pay[7].
How should you budget?
Transfers will take a larger share than on a resort trip. Put real quotes into the budget planner, and use the itineraries topic page to compare other routes.
