For a quiet couple’s week, pick Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay and plan to eat mostly at the resort. For a family that wants shops, street food and variety, Dadonghai is the easier base.
You may feel the three names blur together on the booking page. They do not feel alike once you are there, so decide by how you want your evenings to go.
How do the three bays compare?
The table puts them on the same footing. Always confirm the details on a map, because hotel positions within each bay differ.
| Yalong Bay | Haitang Bay | Dadonghai | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel | Resort district, calm | Newer, larger resort complexes | Closest to the city, livelier |
| Evenings | Mostly at your hotel | Mostly at your hotel | Restaurants and shops nearby |
| Distance from town | A transfer away | A longer transfer | Short taxi ride |
| Suits | Couples, honeymoons | Families wanting big resort grounds | First-timers, mixed-age groups |
| Watch for | Few independent restaurants nearby | Long walks inside big grounds | Noise and crowds |
What do listing phrases really mean?
“Sea view” can mean you can see the water from a balcony, not that the beach is close. “Beachfront” should mean a short, direct path to the sand. “Walk to the beach” needs a time and a route, ideally one without a road crossing.
Ask for the walking time from the lobby to the water and whether the path is flat. Our guide to private and public beaches in Sanya explains who can use which stretch.
Which bay suits which traveller?
Couples tend to enjoy the quieter resort bays, where the setting is part of the holiday. Families with children under school age should weigh the pool, shade and kids club more than the beach name.
Mixed groups with grandparents, who want a few restaurant choices and shorter taxi rides, settle better in Dadonghai. For a closer look at the neighbouring choice, read our Sanya Bay versus Yalong Bay page, and see the Yalong Bay Beach guide for what the beach itself offers.
Should a typhoon change your plan?
China’s main typhoon season runs from July to September, though typhoons can occur from May to December[1]. Hainan is rated high risk[2].
Ask what the hotel does if a storm closes the beach, and whether you can move dates. Do not pay a large non-refundable amount for peak weeks before you have read the cancellation rules.
What should you check before paying?
- The walking time from the lobby to the sand
- Which meals are on site, and what is outside
- Whether a shuttle or taxi rank serves the hotel
- Room position, away from the road or the evening stage
- Cancellation and change rules for storm days
