Five days and four nights is the right length for a Sanya resort holiday: long enough to unwind, short enough that you do not run out of things to do. Pick one beach resort, keep at least two days empty, and let the sea do the work.
This plan is written for couples and comfort seekers who want a calm holiday after a busy year.
Who is this route for?
It suits couples, honeymooners and parents who want a pool, a beach and easy meals. It is less suited to anyone who needs a packed itinerary or a long list of sights. For a bigger Hainan trip with a stop every two nights, compare it with the island circuit versus Sanya resort guide.
What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive and settle in
- Day 2: beach and pool day
- Day 3: one outing, then rest
- Day 4: spa or a second easy outing
- Day 5: slow morning and fly home
Day by day
Day 1: arrive and settle in
The flight from Malaysia may involve a connection, so plan nothing on the first afternoon. Malaysia and mainland China share UTC+8, so nobody has jet lag[1]. Check in, eat dinner at the resort and sleep.
Day 2: beach and pool
Do very little. Go to the beach early or late, when the sun is gentler, and swim in the pool in the middle of the day. Use strong sunscreen and drink water.
Day 3: one outing, then rest
Choose one thing to do outside the resort, such as a temple or a coastal walk, and be back by the afternoon. The Sanya Bay versus Yalong Bay guide helps you decide which bay to base yourself in.
Day 4: spa or a gentler outing
Book a treatment, read by the pool or take a short walk. Keep the evening for a long dinner and an early night.
Day 5: slow morning and fly home
Allow time for check-out and the drive to the airport. Keep your passport in your hand bag. Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa[2], and rules can change, so confirm on the official source.
How do you get there?
Direct flights from Malaysia change by season. Hainan Airlines flight HU477 Haikou to Penang was set to start on 11 October, flying Wednesdays and Sundays[3].
9 Air launched Haikou to Kuching in November 2025 on a twice-weekly basis[4]. From Haikou, you can continue to Sanya; see the Haikou to Sanya rail route. Confirm any schedule with the airline before you fix dates.
When should you go?
China’s main typhoon season is July to September, though typhoons can occur from May to December[5]. Hainan is rated high risk for typhoons[6]. Pick a refundable booking if you travel in those months.
Where should you stay?
- A beach resort: the easiest choice for a rest holiday
- A city hotel: cheaper and closer to food, but further from the sand
Think in areas, not hotel names. Our resort versus city hotel guide lays out the trade-off.
How can you adapt it?
- Shorter: the three-day short break keeps the pool and drops the outings.
- Muslim travellers: read the Sanya area guide for Muslim travellers and check each meal.
- Kids and seniors: choose a resort with a gentle beach and shade.
What should you book ahead?
Book flights, the resort and any airport transfer. Ask the quote what is not included, such as meals, taxes or tips. Hotels in China do not expect tips, though international-standard ones may accept a small amount for housekeeping[7].
