Plan Guilin and Yangshuo Yourself, in Ringgit

You want to see Guilin and Yangshuo on your own and know where the money goes.

A DIY Guilin and Yangshuo trip works well because the two places are close and the route is simple. This plan gives you the day order and the budget lines to fill in with your own quotes.

It is natural to worry that doing it yourself will go wrong somewhere. The usual problems are small: a missing transfer, a card that will not pay or a day packed too tightly. They are fixable if you plan them first.

Who is this route for?

It suits friend groups, couples and cost-conscious solo travellers comfortable with an app or two. Guilin is at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so altitude is not a concern. West Street, the Yangshuo centre, has Chinese and English signage[3], which helps if you do not speak Mandarin.

What does the route look like?

  • Day 1: arrive in Guilin, lakeside walk
  • Day 2: Li River to Yangshuo
  • Day 3: Yulong River by raft or bicycle
  • Day 4: Xingping or a free day
  • Day 5: back to Guilin, flight home

Day by day

Day 1: arrive in Guilin

Land at Guilin Liangjiang Airport, about 28 km southwest of the city centre[4]. Compare the airport transfer options in our airport guide. Walk by the lakes; Guilin’s main city landmarks include Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas[5], and walking costs nothing.

Day 2: the river

The Li River is 164 km long, and the stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo is about 83 km[6]. Compare boat, bus and taxi in the transport guide before paying, and decide the night before. In Yangshuo, check in and have dinner away from the busiest lane.

Day 3: raft and fields

Take a bamboo raft or rent a bicycle and ride between the villages. Our Yulong River guide explains the booking and the hours. Bicycles cannot be carried aboard high-speed trains, so rent one in Yangshuo rather than bring your own[7].

Day 4: Xingping or a free day

Add Xingping if the group still has energy, or keep the day free and save the money. The Xianggong Hill note helps you choose.

Day 5: return

Return to Guilin early and leave a buffer for the airport. Keep your passport handy for hotels, trains and platform gates[8].

What lines belong in the budget?

Build the sheet in the order you pay, and leave a cell for each.

  • Flights from your Malaysian city
  • Hotel nights, and the tax or deposit
  • Guilin to Yangshuo transport, and the return
  • Boat, raft and entry tickets
  • Food, with a daily allowance
  • Mobile data or an eSIM
  • Payment fees, if any
  • A buffer for one unexpected taxi

Enter your own quotes, because prices move with the season. The budget planner lets you do that in ringgit.

How do you pay on a DIY trip?

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[9]. Travel guides report a 3% fee on foreign-card Alipay payments above 200 yuan and none at or below[10]. Confirm in the app before you rely on it.

Keep some cash too. Renminbi in any form including cash is legal tender, and merchants are urged to accept it[11]. More than 60,000 bank outlets offer foreign currency exchange, and kiosks at airports dispense banknotes[12].

Where should you stay?

Pick a lakeside area in Guilin for one night and decide on Yangshuo using the one or two hotels guide. A shared room can split the cost across a group, but check the bed and bathroom count first.

How can you adapt it?

  • Tighter budget: shorten to three days with the quick version.
  • Muslim travellers: Hui Muslims avoid pork[13]. Look for the green 清真 sign, and check halal.gov.my for labels.
  • Seniors: add one taxi a day and skip steep climbs.

What should you book ahead?

Book the flights and the first and last nights. Check the KL to Guilin flight options for routes. Compare your sheet against a quote with the package comparator.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is DIY cheaper than a package for Guilin and Yangshuo?

It can be, if your group is small and you avoid expensive extras. But a package can include entry, transfers and guide time that you would otherwise pay for separately. Build both on the same days and list every line in the budget planner before you decide.

How should friends handle money on a DIY trip?

Open a shared note listing each cost and who paid it, then settle in ringgit when you are home. Keep some renminbi cash as well, since the PBOC says cash is legal tender and merchants should accept it. Carry a payment app as a backup.

Where can DIY costs creep up?

Usually in taxis taken at the last minute, unplanned boat tickets and foreign-card payments with a fee. Decide the Guilin to Yangshuo transport before you arrive, compare the bus, taxi and boat guide, and check fee rules in your payment app.
