Spend the first night in Guilin, take the river to Yangshuo on Day 2, and use the last morning for a bamboo raft or a bicycle before the flight. That is the shortest version that still feels like a holiday.
If you are four friends splitting costs, the main saving is shared transport. Seats on a bus cost one by one, while a car or van is shared among the group.
Who is this route for?
It suits groups of friends, couples and budget-conscious travellers with a long weekend. Guilin is at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so nobody needs to worry about altitude. It is flat enough for most ages, though the countryside has uneven paths.
If you can stretch to four days, our four-day Guilin and Yangshuo plan gives you a calmer rhythm.
What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive in Guilin, the lakes and the old landmarks
- Day 2: Li River cruise to Yangshuo, West Street in the evening
- Day 3: Yulong River or cycling, then back to the airport
Day by day
Day 1: arrive and walk
Land at Guilin Liangjiang Airport, about 28 km southwest of the city centre[3]. Share a car from the airport if you arrive close together. Our airport transfer guide compares the choices.
After checking in, walk to Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake, which are among Guilin’s main city landmarks[4]. Eat locally and sleep early, because the boat leaves in the morning.
Day 2: the river
The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[5]. Its scenery appears on the fifth series 20 yuan banknote[6], so you can hold up a note and compare. Pack water and a hat, because the deck is open.
Read the Li River cruise guide before you pay for a boat, and compare it with the bus or taxi in the transport guide. In Yangshuo, West Street received over 21.1 million tourists in 2023[7], so go for dinner early and pick a quieter lane.
Day 3: countryside and home
Spend a gentle morning on the Yulong River by bamboo raft, or on a bicycle through the fields. Our bamboo raft guide explains how to avoid the crowded hours. Leave by lunchtime for the airport, with a generous buffer, because the road from Yangshuo to Guilin is not short.
How long are the travel legs?
The cruise day is the longest. Plan most of Day 2 for the boat and the transfers, and book nothing hard that afternoon. On Day 3, count the return to Guilin as part of the morning, not an afterthought.
Where should you stay?
Choose a lakeside area in Guilin for Night 1, and West Street or the countryside in Yangshuo for Night 2. For a short trip, the West Street versus countryside guide helps you decide: West Street is closer to food, the countryside is quieter but further from the evening lights.
How can you adapt it?
- Tight budget: skip paid extras and spend on the river and one good meal.
- Rain: swap Day 2 and Day 3 if a heavy morning is forecast.
- Muslim friends: look for the green 清真 sign. Hui Muslims avoid pork[8], but a Chinese halal label does not automatically meet Malaysian recognition, so check halal.gov.my.
- Paying: travel guides report a 3% fee on foreign-card Alipay payments above 200 yuan, and none at or below that[9]. Confirm in the app, and keep some cash.
What should you book ahead?
Book the flights, the first night and the boat or transfer. Under the mutual exemption that took effect on 17 July 2025, Malaysians can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa[10]. Confirm on the official source before travel.
Compare quotes in the package comparator, and price the trip in ringgit with the budget planner. For a longer, cheaper-per-day version, read the budget DIY plan.
What if your flight lands late or leaves early?
A late landing shifts the whole plan by half a day. If you reach Guilin after dark, go straight to the hotel, skip the lakeside walk and keep the river day as it is.
An early flight on Day 3 means the raft or bicycle morning disappears. In that case, move it to the afternoon of Day 2 after the boat, or accept a shorter trip and enjoy the river day properly. Tell your group which one you will cut before you leave home.
