We found no confirmed Kuala Lumpur to Guilin nonstop in the sources we use, so most travellers go in through Guangzhou. When we checked in October 2026, Guangzhou was on the nine-gateway list Malaysia Airlines gave[1]. From there, a short high-speed train takes you to Guilin.
That extra leg can feel like effort you did not plan for. It is a manageable half day, and the scenery at the end rewards it.
How do you reach Guilin from Malaysia?
There are two sensible ways. Choose by what you value: fewer legs or a gentle pace.
| Way in | What it involves | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Fly to Guangzhou, then train | One international flight, then a high-speed train | Travellers who want a calm second leg |
| Fly to Guangzhou, then a domestic flight | Two flights, one connection | Those saving time on the day |
Penang has a Guangzhou route, and Spring Airlines began Guangzhou to Penang on 1 February 2026 with three weekly flights[2]. Johor Bahru also had a direct Guangzhou route[3]. See our Penang and Johor guide for the other airports.
How does the train from Guangzhou work?
Guilin to Guangzhou high-speed trains take roughly 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes depending on train type[4]. Guide figures vary, so confirm the time on 12306.
Check which Guangzhou station your train leaves from, because the airport and the station are in different parts of a large city. Guangzhou Baiyun Airport is about 28 km north of downtown[5]. Our guide to flight and train connections shows how much time to leave between the two.
What is Guilin airport like?
Guilin Liangjiang Airport is about 28 km southwest of the city centre[6]. If you fly in through a Chinese hub, you can land there directly. Read the airport transfer guide for town and Yangshuo transfers.
Is Guilin easy on the body?
Yes. Guilin is at about 153 m above sea level[7], and Yangshuo is about 137 m[8], so there is no altitude to manage. That makes it kind to seniors and small children.
What should you do after you arrive?
Rest on the first evening and plan the Li River for the next day. The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[9]. Our guide to Guilin to Yangshuo transport compares the choices.
For the wider picture, read the Guilin and Yangshuo overview, then use the budget planner. The Kuala Lumpur gateway list shows the other routes in, and the getting around topic page has the rest.
