Getting From Guilin to Yangshuo Your Way

Three ways to cover the short gap between Guilin and Yangshuo, and how to pick the kindest one.

For most visitors the simplest way from Guilin to Yangshuo is a pre-arranged car or taxi, with a bus as the cheaper alternative and the Li River boat as a scenic day out. Which one suits you depends on who is travelling and how much you carry.

Most first-timers feel unsure about this step, because it looks short on the map but involves a few moving parts. This guide sorts them out.

What are the three options?

Li River boatTravellers who want the viewsA full day, plus transfers at both ends

If you are travelling with a parent, choose the car. If you want the scenery, choose the boat and treat it as an activity, not a transfer.

Why is the transfer easier than it looks?

Both places lie low in the landscape: Guilin at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2]. There are no altitude concerns here, so the only things to plan are comfort and timing.

The karst scenery around Guilin is part of South China Karst, inscribed by UNESCO in 2007[3]. Enjoy the road views, and keep a window seat if you can.

How do you arrange a car without Mandarin?

Ask your Guilin hotel to book the car and write the Yangshuo hotel’s name and address in Chinese. A ride-hailing booking also works, and foreign visitors commonly use Didi through the Alipay mini program, which needs no Chinese phone number[4]. Read our Didi guide for Malaysians before you go.

Taxi fares are metered and passengers usually pay the exact fare[5]. For a longer private transfer, agree the price before the car moves.

How does a boat day work?

Think of it as a day trip, not a transfer. You travel to the pier, spend several hours on the water, then continue from the landing point to your Yangshuo hotel. Leave luggage at your hotel if you can, or check what the operator allows.

Book through your hotel or a licensed agency, and ask what time the last return transport leaves.

What else should you check?

  • Whether the pick-up is at your hotel door or the nearest road.
  • How much luggage the vehicle can carry.
  • How long the stop at the pier or bus station will be.
  • That your Yangshuo hotel knows your arrival time.

Our Guilin Liangjiang airport transfer guide helps if you arrive by air, and the private driver for Guilin and Yangshuo page describes what a driver covers.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which option is easiest for seniors?

A pre-arranged car or taxi is the easiest, because it takes you from hotel to hotel with no steps or station queues. A bus is cheaper but has more walking and waiting. Choose the car if a parent walks slowly or carries a lot of luggage.

Is the Li River boat a transfer or a day trip?

Treat it as a day trip. The boat ride is slow and scenic, and you still need transport to the pier and from the landing. It suits travellers who want the views and are happy to give a full day, not those on a tight schedule.

Can I book these without speaking Mandarin?

Yes. Ask your hotel to arrange a car or write the destination in Chinese. A ride-hailing app also works through the Alipay mini program, which needs no Chinese phone number. Save your Yangshuo hotel name and address in Chinese before you leave.

Should I tip the driver?

Tipping is not customary on the Chinese mainland, and taxi fares are metered with passengers paying the exact fare. For a private driver, a small thank-you is welcome but never required. Agree the price before you set off.
