Guilin and Yangshuo: One Hotel or Two

The river and hills sit close together, so why would you move hotels at all?

For three nights or fewer, one hotel is calmer. For four nights or more, two hotels let you wake up among the hills. Guilin and Yangshuo are close, so the choice is about comfort, not distance.

If anyone in your group tires on stairs or dislikes repacking, the simpler plan is the better one. Here is how the options compare.

How do the three options compare?

Pick by your slowest traveller and your number of nights.

Does altitude matter here?

No. Guilin is at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo about 137 m[2], so grandparents who worry about Yunnan can relax here. That makes the decision simpler, because only stairs, noise and luggage are left to weigh.

How big is the move between the towns?

The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[3]. Treat the move as a half day, whether by river cruise or by car.

A cruise with large suitcases is awkward, so ask a hotel about a car for the bags. The Guilin and Yangshuo region overview shows the whole shape.

What does each town do best?

Guilin gives you the city sights, such as Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake[4]. Our Guilin city stay guide compares the central areas.

Yangshuo gives you the hills. West Street drew over 21.1 million tourists in 2023 and has Chinese and English signage[5]. That makes it lively and easy to read, but loud at night, and the West Street or countryside guide helps you choose a quieter room.

What should you check before you book?

Before you pay for a room, check these five things.

  • A lift, or ground-floor rooms, if stairs are hard.
  • A road the taxi can reach, with a short carry for bags.
  • Distance from the nightlife on West Street.
  • Whether the hotel can hold bags after check-out.
  • Whether breakfast suits your food needs.

Does the choice matter for Muslim travellers?

Check halal food meal by meal in both towns. Look for the green sign and the characters 清真 (qingzhen), and ask about the kitchen. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified, and our South China halal guide has more.

What should you do next?

Passports are copied at check-in[6], so keep them in the day bag when you move. If you arrive by air, Guilin’s airport is about 28 km southwest of the centre[7]. Browse the cities topic page for more regions.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is it enough to stay in Guilin only?

It can be. Guilin has the main city sights, and you can reach Yangshuo as a long day out. You will see the landscape but miss the quiet evenings in the hills. This suits short stays and travellers who dislike changing hotels.

Is Yangshuo suitable for seniors?

Yes, with care. The town is at a low height, so there is no altitude concern. Choose a hotel with a lift or ground-floor rooms, as some guesthouses have steps. West Street is lively at night, so ask for a room away from it if sleep matters.

How should we arrange luggage between the two towns?

Send nothing ahead and keep one bag per person for the move. Ask your Guilin hotel about a car to Yangshuo, since a cruise and a suitcase make a poor pair. Keep passports in your day bag, as both hotels will copy them.

Does the choice matter for Muslim travellers?

Halal food needs checking meal by meal in both towns. Look for the green 清真 sign, ask about the kitchen and keep safe snacks in your day bag. Our guide to South China for Muslim travellers lists more.
