This route pairs the river hills of Guangxi with the sandstone pillars of Hunan, and it only works if the middle travel day is respected. Three nights in the Guilin and Yangshuo area, one night for the move and three nights around Zhangjiajie leave you rested enough to enjoy both.
Return visitors who have already done Yunnan or Sichuan like this pairing, and the worry is always the same: too much scenery, too little time. The plan below keeps one big sight per day.
Who is this route for?
It suits return visitors, couples and friends who want scenery more than shopping. Guilin stands at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so altitude is not a concern. Zhangjiajie is gentle too, with the weather station at 219 m and the highest peak in Wulingyuan around 1,050 m[3].
If it is your first China trip and you want a shorter, simpler plan, start from the Guilin and Yangshuo region overview instead.
What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive in Guilin, a slow walk by the lakes
- Day 2: Li River cruise to Yangshuo
- Day 3: Yangshuo countryside, rafting or cycling
- Day 4: travel day to Zhangjiajie
- Day 5: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
- Day 6: Tianmen Mountain
- Day 7: a slow day, the glass bridge or rest
- Day 8: transfer and flight home
Day by day
Days 1 and 2: Guilin and the river
Land at Guilin Liangjiang Airport, about 28 km southwest of the city centre[4]. Check in and walk near Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake[5]. Keep the first evening light.
On Day 2 take the boat. The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[6]. Read the Li River cruise guide to choose a section and boat, bring a hat, and spend the evening on West Street.
Day 3: Yangshuo at walking pace
Spend the morning on the water or on a bicycle, rest at midday, and use the late afternoon for a viewpoint. Our Yulong River bamboo raft guide explains how to avoid the busiest hours. Nothing else is planned, and that is the point.
Day 4: the travel day
Move from the Guilin area to Zhangjiajie by rail or by air, whichever your dates allow. Plan most of the day for this leg, including the transfer to the station or airport at both ends. Do not add a morning sight.
Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport is about 5 km from downtown and about 30 km from Wulingyuan Scenic Area[7]. The city has two railway stations, Zhangjiajie and Zhangjiajie West[8]. Check which one your ticket uses before you book a hotel transfer.
Days 5 to 7: forest park, mountain and a slow day
Zhangjiajie became China’s first national forest park in 1982[9], and Wulingyuan has over 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars, many taller than 200 m[10]. Entry tickets are commonly described as valid for four consecutive days with multiple entries[11]. Confirm the rule at the gate before you plan around it.
Spend Day 5 in the forest park, using the Bailong Elevator, which climbs 326 m[12], to save knees. Day 6 is Tianmen Mountain, where the cable car runs about 7,455 m with a rise of about 1,279 m[13]. Our Tianmen Mountain guide covers the queues.
Day 7 is yours. Visit the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, 430 m long and 300 m high[14], if heights suit everyone, or simply rest.
Day 8: home
Fly home from Zhangjiajie through a Chinese hub, or move to Changsha for a direct flight. Malaysia Airlines began Kuala Lumpur to Changsha on 8 July 2026 as MH520, returning as MH521[15]. Schedules shift, so confirm with the airline.
How long are the travel legs?
Only Day 4 and Day 8 are real travel days. The Guilin to Yangshuo boat day is long but pleasant, and the transport guide compares bus, taxi and boat. If you go by train, keep your passport with you, because tickets and platform gates need it[16].
Where should you stay?
Stay one night near Guilin’s lakes, two in Yangshuo, then three around Zhangjiajie. In Zhangjiajie, Wulingyuan village or a city hotel is the main choice: the village is closer to the park gate, the city has more food choices.
How can you adapt it?
- Seniors: drop the glass bridge and the cruise-day extras, and use lifts.
- Children: keep Day 3 on the river and shorten Day 6.
- Muslim travellers: look for the green 清真 sign. Hui Muslims avoid pork[17], but a Chinese halal label does not automatically meet Malaysian recognition, so check halal.gov.my.
- Rain: swap the river day and the countryside day.
What should you check in a package quote?
Ask whether the Day 4 transfer is a flight or train and how long you wait at each end. Ask whether Zhangjiajie park tickets and the cable car are included, and whether any shopping stops are added. Compare quotes in the package comparator, test the pace in the pace checker and price the trip in the budget planner.
