Guilin and Yangshuo Made Simple

Rivers, hills and a short list of choices: start with who is travelling.

Most Malaysians do well with four nights in Guilin and Yangshuo: a short stay in Guilin for transport, and the rest in Yangshuo among the river and the hills. If your leave is short and the list of Chinese destinations feels endless, this region is one of the gentler places to begin.

It is normal to wonder whether the pictures are real, or whether you need to speak Mandarin. Both worries have practical answers below.

Who enjoys Guilin and Yangshuo most?

First-timers, families with grandparents and anyone who prefers slow scenery to long walks.

Guilin sits at about 153 m above sea level[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so no one needs to worry about altitude.

What is there to see?

Guilin’s main city landmarks include Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake[3]. The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[4]. Its scenery appears on the fifth series 20 yuan banknote[5], so you may recognise the view. Our Li River cruise guide explains which section and boat to choose.

South China Karst, which includes the Guilin cluster, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2007 and extended in 2014[6]. Besides the river, plan time for Yulong River rafting, Reed Flute Cave and a slow evening in Yangshuo.

Where should you base yourself?

Think in areas, not hotel names.

  • Guilin city centre: easy transport links, and a good first or last night.
  • Yangshuo town: restaurants and walkable lanes, with the option of an evening stroll.
  • Countryside guesthouse: quiet fields and views, but a taxi for dinner.

Yangshuo West Street received over 21.1 million tourists in 2023, with Chinese and English signage[7]. That helps if you worry about reading signs, but it is busy at night. Our West Street versus countryside guide compares the two. Browse our hotel-area guides for Xingping and Guilin, too.

How do you get there from Malaysia?

Fly into Guilin if a direct or one-stop route suits your dates, or enter through another city and continue by rail. Guilin Liangjiang Airport is about 28 km southwest of the city centre[8]. Check our KL to Guilin flight options for what to compare, and confirm schedules with the airline.

High-speed trains between Guilin and Guangzhou take roughly 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes depending on train type[9]. Keep your passport handy, because train tickets and platform gates need it[10]. Malaysia and mainland China share UTC+8, so there is no jet lag[11].

Between the two towns, choose bus, taxi or boat using our Guilin to Yangshuo transport guide.

Can you manage without Chinese, Google and WhatsApp?

Yes, with preparation. Google services and WhatsApp are blocked in mainland China[12], while Apple Maps still works[13]. Set up your eSIM or roaming, save offline maps and screenshots of addresses, and tell family at home how you will reach them.

For payments, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club cards can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[14]. Set it up before you leave, and carry a little cash.

What about halal food?

Halal food needs checking meal by meal. Look for the green Arabic sign and 清真 (qingzhen), and start with Hui-run restaurants, since the Hui avoid pork[15]. Ask about the kitchen, and remember Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

In February 2025 JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so check halal.gov.my before relying on a Chinese label[16].

When is it not the right choice?

If you want mountains and cooler air, compare it with the southwest in our Zhangjiajie versus Guilin guide. If you have already seen the Li River, read Guilin versus wider Guangxi.

Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay in China visa-free for up to 30 days per stay[17]. Save the Consulate General of Malaysia in Nanning, whose emergency line is +86 159 7778 3818[18], and 120 for an ambulance[19].

How does it fit a bigger plan?

Guilin and Yangshuo work as a stand-alone trip of four to six nights, or as the scenic leg after Guangzhou. Use the pace checker to test your draft, and browse the regions topic page to compare other parts of China.

Questions Malaysians ask

How many nights do we need in Guilin and Yangshuo?

Four nights is comfortable: one or two around Guilin, two in Yangshuo. That leaves one day for the river, one for the countryside and a rest day. With a short break, three nights works if you skip Guilin's city sights.

Do we need Mandarin to get around?

Not necessarily. Yangshuo West Street has Chinese and English signage, and guesthouses in the main tourist areas cope with simple English. Still, save your hotel name in Chinese, download an offline translation app and carry a bilingual transfer sheet. We can prepare one for your route.

Is the Li River cruise worth it?

For most first-timers, yes. The Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km of the 164 km river, and the karst scenery is the reason people come. Choose the section and boat carefully, and check how long you will sit before you book.

Is Guilin suitable for seniors and young children?

Yes. Guilin is at about 153 m and Yangshuo about 137 m, so altitude is not a concern. Keep days short, sit on boats instead of climbing, and choose a hotel near the town centre so nobody walks far after dinner.

Is it easy for Muslim travellers?

It needs planning. Look for the green 清真 sign and Hui-run restaurants, ask about the kitchen and ingredients, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified. A Chinese halal label may not meet Malaysian recognition, so check halal.gov.my.

Do we need a visa?

Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay in China visa-free for up to 30 days per stay under the mutual exemption that took effect on 17 July 2025. Rules can change, so confirm on the official source and check that your passport is valid for the whole trip.
