Landing, Then Catching a Train

You land tired from the flight, and a train ticket is waiting in your phone.

Treat a flight-to-train day as four separate jobs with a cushion at the end: getting off the plane and through immigration, collecting bags, crossing from airport to station, and passing the station entrance. If the total looks tight, take the later train or sleep a night first.

It is natural to want to be on the high-speed train before dark. But a tired family with a delayed flight and a booked seat is a common recipe for stress.

What are the four parts of the buffer?

Each part has a real cost, and none of them is on the ticket.

  • Arrival: the flight lands, you leave the plane and join the immigration queue.
  • Bags: you wait at the carousel and walk out with your suitcases.
  • Transfer: you ride to the station, which may be a different part of the city.
  • Station entry: you pass the bag check and find the platform.

If you have not filed ahead, travellers can complete the arrival card at the immigration inspection site by QR code, on-site smart device or a paper card[1]. That takes time too, so file ahead if you can.

The link varies by city, so check the detail in each place.

Beijing CapitalThe Airport Express runs from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 to Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao in about 16 to 20 minutes[2]How you reach your own rail station from the metro
Shanghai PudongThe maglev ends at Longyang Road, where you change to the metro[3]The second ride, with bags

Our guides to Beijing airport transfers, Shanghai Pudong transfers and Chengdu’s two airports cover the detail.

What does the station add?

Expect X-ray bag checks at station entrances, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[7]. You also need your passport for the platform gates[8].

Count the station arrival time as the last part of the plan, not a separate one. The arrival time guide shows how to work it backwards from the departure.

When is a night in the arrival city better?

Sleep a night first if any of these are true: the flight lands late, you travel with grandparents or small children, or you have checked bags and a long walk at the station. A hotel near the station costs a night but saves a missed ticket.

If you are comparing train and flight for the next leg, use the rail versus flight tool.

What should you do next?

Write the four parts, add a cushion, and see what time the train must leave. If that time is uncomfortable, move the train later. For shorter changes between two trains, read the tight connection guide, or the rail versus domestic flight guide.

Questions Malaysians ask

How much time should I leave between landing and my train?

Add up four things: getting off the plane and through immigration, collecting bags, the ride to the station, and the station check. Then add a cushion for a late flight. If the total looks thin, buy the later train or sleep a night first. A calm plan beats a fast one.

Should I book the train before the flight lands?

Only if you have room for a delay. If you can change the ticket, booking early is fine. If not, the later train protects you. Remember that tickets usually go on sale 15 days ahead, so check the date. Keep your passport in hand for the platform gates.

What if the flight is delayed and I miss the train?

Check the change and refund rules before you buy, and ask the railway staff at the station about the next train. A flight and a train bought separately are not linked, so the train will not wait. A flexible ticket or a later train gives you room.

Is it better to sleep a night after a long flight?

Yes in most cases, especially with parents or children. A night in the arrival city removes the risk of a missed train, and everyone starts the rail leg rested. Choose a hotel near the station or on the metro line you will use the next day.
