Guangxi

Beyond the Li River in Guangxi

You have seen the Li River, or are about to, and wonder what else Guangxi offers.

For most Malaysians, Guilin and Yangshuo are enough for a first Guangxi trip. Wider Guangxi suits a second visit, or a longer holiday with time to travel between the places.

If you have already seen the Li River in photographs, or you are looking for a second province after Yunnan, that curiosity is fair. Here is how the options compare.

How do the three options compare?

Pick by pace and effort, not by the photo that caught your eye.

Guilin sits at about 153 m above sea level[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so altitude is not a concern for any age. Read our Guilin and Yangshuo overview for the full picture.

What makes the Li River special?

The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[3]. The scenery is part of South China Karst, which was inscribed in 2007 and extended in 2014 to include the Guilin cluster[4]. That karst spans four provinces and municipalities: Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan[5].

If you want to compare it with the southwest, our Yunnan versus Guilin guide sets the two side by side.

When does wider Guangxi make sense?

Add Longji if you are fit, love photography and have a spare day. Our Longji terraces page explains the effort. Add the Detian side only if you have a longer holiday, and read the Detian and Nanning region guide first, because distances are long.

Coastal Guangxi, along with Hainan, Guangdong and Fujian, is rated high risk for typhoons[6]. If you head south toward the coast, check the forecast and keep a spare day.

How do you reach Guilin from Malaysia?

Guilin Liangjiang Airport is about 28 km southwest of the city centre[7]. Our KL to Guilin flight options lists what to compare.

If you are linking Guilin with Guangzhou, high-speed trains take roughly 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes depending on train type[8]. Confirm on 12306 before you fix plans, and use the rail versus flight tool to weigh the legs.

What if something goes wrong?

Call 120 for a medical emergency[9]. The Consulate General of Malaysia in Nanning is at 45th Floor, International Chamber of Commerce Tower, 59 Jinhu Road, with an emergency line of +86 159 7778 3818[10]. Save it before you travel.

What should you do next?

Count your days, decide whether Guilin alone is enough, then read the regions topic page for other provinces.

Tell us how many days you have and whether this is your first or second trip to Guangxi, and we can suggest whether to stay with Guilin or add one more place.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Guilin enough for a first visit to Guangxi?

Yes. Guilin and Yangshuo give you the Li River, karst hills and easy towns in one compact trip, and the altitude is low, at about 153 m for Guilin. Wider Guangxi suits a second visit or a longer holiday.

Is Detian practical for a short holiday?

It is a stretch. Detian lies far from Guilin, near the border, so it works best as a separate trip based around Nanning. For a short holiday, keep Guilin and Yangshuo and save Detian for next time.

Is Guangxi a good choice for seniors?

Guilin and Yangshuo are gentle, with low altitude and short days. Longji terraces involve steps and slopes, so treat them as optional. Talk through knees and stamina with us before you choose the farther places.

Who do I call if something goes wrong in Guangxi?

For a medical emergency in China, call 120. The Consulate General of Malaysia in Nanning also serves travellers in the region, and its details are in the official Wisma Putra listing. Save both before you leave.
