Zhangjiajie or Guilin for You

Two famous landscapes, one holiday: pick the one that matches your legs and your camera.

Choose Guilin and Yangshuo if your group wants gentle days, boats and low altitude. Choose Zhangjiajie if you are fit, enjoy heights and want dramatic stone pillars. If you cannot decide, the answer usually comes from one question: who in your group dislikes stairs or heights?

How do the two compare?

Judge them on the kind of day each one gives you.

The Zhangjiajie weather station sits at 219 m and the highest peak in Wulingyuan is around 1,050 m[1]. Guilin is at about 153 m[2] and Yangshuo about 137 m[3].

What will you actually see at Zhangjiajie?

Wulingyuan has over 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars, many taller than 200 m[4], and it was inscribed by UNESCO in 1992[5]. Zhangjiajie became China’s first national forest park in 1982[6].

Three man-made sights help you reach the heights. The Bailong Elevator climbs 326 m[7]. The Tianmen Mountain cable car is about 7,455 m long with a rise of about 1,279 m[8]. The Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is 430 m long and 300 m high and opened in August 2016[9].

If heights make someone anxious, they can still enjoy the forest park from below. Read our Zhangjiajie forest park plan and the Tianmen cable car page before choosing.

What will you actually see around Guilin?

The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[10]. South China Karst was inscribed in 2007 and extended in 2014 to include the Guilin cluster[11]. Our Li River cruise guide and Guilin and Yangshuo overview show how a gentle day goes.

How do you reach each place?

Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport is about 5 km from downtown and about 30 km from the Wulingyuan Scenic Area[12]. Guilin Liangjiang Airport is about 28 km southwest of the city centre[13]. Zhangjiajie has two railway stations, so check which one your ticket uses[14].

Park entry tickets are commonly described as valid for four consecutive days with multiple entries[15]. The details differ between sources, so confirm through the park’s own channels. For hotels, see Wulingyuan village versus city hotel.

Which should you choose?

Pick Zhangjiajie for stone drama and a fit group. Pick Guilin for water, ease and a mixed-age group. If you are still weighing a southwest alternative, our Yunnan versus Guilin guide sets those side by side.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which is better for a first trip to China?

Guilin and Yangshuo are gentler and better for families with seniors. Zhangjiajie is more dramatic but involves lifts, cable cars and steps. If your group is fit and loves photography, Zhangjiajie rewards the effort. If not, choose Guilin.

Which one is better for seniors and young children?

Guilin and Yangshuo, because the altitude is low, boats do the work and days are short. Zhangjiajie has the Bailong Elevator and cable cars that help, but also long queues, heights and lots of stairs. Judge by how each person copes with heights.

Do I need to worry about altitude?

Not at either place. Guilin is at about 153 m and the Zhangjiajie weather station at 219 m. The highest peak in Wulingyuan is around 1,050 m, so the effect comes from steps and heights, not thin air.

Can I do both in one trip?

Yes, but it adds a long travel leg and a second flight or rail journey. With ten days or more it can work. With a week, choose one and give it your full attention, rather than rushing between two big landscapes.

Which is easier to reach from Malaysia?

Both usually need a connection or a planned entry through another Chinese city. Guilin's airport is about 28 km from the centre, Zhangjiajie's about 5 km from downtown. Check flight options for your dates before choosing.

Which is better for photographers?

Zhangjiajie for towering pillars and misty ridges, Guilin for rivers and hills in soft light. Photographers who like cloud and drama should lean toward Zhangjiajie. Photographers who like calm water and reflections should choose Guilin.
