Seven days works if you treat the road as part of the holiday and sleep in the right order. This plan goes Chengdu, Songpan, the valley gate, then back to Chengdu for a gentle last full day.
It is the route for the traveller who has seen the photos of the turquoise lakes and wants to know if one week is honest. It is, with one slow day built in.
Who is this route for?
It suits scenery lovers, photographers and parents of grown children who enjoy a long drive for a big view. It does not suit anyone who dislikes winding mountain roads, or a group where one person cannot manage a full day of walking on boardwalks.
If the road worries you, read the private car guide from Chengdu first. It explains the choices before you compare quotes.
What does the route look like?
- Day 1: arrive in Chengdu and rest
- Day 2: panda base in the morning, then travel to Songpan
- Day 3: Huanglong in the morning, then on to the valley gate
- Day 4: a full day in Jiuzhaigou Valley
- Day 5: slow morning, then return to Chengdu
- Day 6: a free day in Chengdu
- Day 7: fly home
Day by day
Day 1: Chengdu, arrive and rest
Malaysia and mainland China share the same time zone, so you land without jet lag[1]. Chengdu is at about 500 m[2], which makes it the right place to sleep first.
Check in, eat something mild and go to bed early. Tomorrow starts with a panda visit.
Day 2: pandas, then Songpan
Visit the panda base early, while the animals are active. Chengdu’s research base was founded in 1987 with six rescued pandas[3], and the panda base timing guide explains the ticket side.
Leave by early afternoon for Songpan, a quiet county town at about 2,867 m[4]. Plan most of the afternoon for this leg and keep dinner light.
Day 3: Huanglong, then the valley gate
Go to Huanglong in the morning, when you are freshest. The site ranges from about 1,700 m up to the 5,588 m summit of Xuebaoding[5], and it is a UNESCO site, inscribed in 1992[6]. Walk the boardwalk slowly and stop to rest; the Huanglong guide covers the climb.
In the afternoon continue to your base near the valley entrance.
Day 4: Jiuzhaigou Valley
This is the day the trip is built around. Jiuzhaigou ranges from about 2,000 m to about 4,500 m[7], and it was inscribed by UNESCO in 1992[8].
Tickets are booked online in advance under real names, with no ticket window at the scenic spot[9]. Carry the passport used for the booking and read the valley visit plan for the bus loop.
Day 5: slow morning, return to Chengdu
Sleep late, take a short walk and leave after breakfast. Whether you travel by road or by the new rail line, plan most of the day for the return.
The Chengdu to Lanzhou line was partly open when we checked, with Songpan and Huanglongjiuzhai stations opened on 30 August 2024[10]. Confirm the current timetable on 12306 before you rely on it.
Day 6: a free day in Chengdu
Do nothing hard. Stroll the Wide and Narrow Alleys, sit in a tea house, shop for gifts and pack.
Day 7: fly home
Leave for the airport with time to spare. Malaysia Airlines said in July 2026 that it serves Chengdu among nine China-region gateways[11], so check your own airline and day.
Where to stay
Think in areas, not hotel names.
- Chengdu: near a metro line, so airport and station transfers are simple
- Songpan: the old town, for a quiet first night at height
- Valley gate: the area nearest the entrance, so the morning queue is short
The valley entrance stay guide compares the gate with Songpan and Chuanzhusi.
How can you adapt it?
- Seniors: spend the extra night at Songpan on the way in and skip the second Chengdu day only if the group is fit.
- Children: shorten the Huanglong walk and keep the panda visit as the treat.
- Halal meals: ask each stop to name a Hui-run restaurant, because the Hui avoid pork[12]. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.
What should you book ahead?
Book flights and the valley date first, then the Songpan night. Ask any quote to show the Chengdu to Songpan leg, the Huanglong visit, both valley nights and any shopping stops.
Run your draft through the pace checker, then compare quotes in the package comparator. Prices move with the season, so use the budget planner to plug in today’s figures in ringgit.
