By Private Car from Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou

You want the valley at its best light, and the road there is long.

A private car is the most flexible way to reach Jiuzhaigou, because you control the photograph stops, the rest breaks and the pace. The road is long, so treat the journey as part of the trip, not a cost to endure.

If you are carrying camera gear, or travelling with parents, that flexibility is worth thinking about. Here is how the road day works and what to check.

What does the road day look like?

The road climbs from the Chengdu plain into the mountains. Chengdu’s urban area sits at about 500 m[1], and Songpan county town is at about 2,867 m[2].

Plan most of a day for this leg, and keep the arrival evening free. Our Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong region guide explains when the trip works and when it does not.

What about altitude?

Altitude changes the plan. Jiuzhaigou Valley ranges from about 2,000 m to about 4,500 m[3].

Go up gradually, drink water and walk slowly on the first day. If a family member has a heart or breathing condition, speak to your doctor before you book.

Is there a train?

Partly. The Chengdu-Lanzhou line toward Jiuzhaigou is listed as partly operational, and the Huanglongjiuzhai and Songpan stations opened on 30 August 2024[4]. Check the current status and timetable before you plan around it.

Even where rail runs, you may still need a car from the station to the valley. See our guide to private transfers versus rail for how to weigh the two.

How do tickets work?

Tickets are the rule that decides your timing. Jiuzhaigou tickets are booked online in advance under real names, and there is no ticket window at the scenic spot[5].

Book through the official channel, have your passport details ready and check the park’s own site for the latest rules. The valley was closed to tourists after the August 2017 earthquake[6], so check that every area you want to see is open.

How should photographers plan the day?

Build the road into the day instead of fighting it.

  • Leave Chengdu early, and agree the break points with the driver.
  • Keep the camera bag in the cabin, not the boot.
  • Carry water and a warm layer, since the temperature drops with height.
  • Hold one spare day for weather, because light and clouds decide the pictures.

If anyone gets car sick on bends, read our guide to motion sickness on mountain roads.

What should you ask the agency?

Ask for a written plan. Prices move with the season and the vehicle, so request a quote in ringgit that lists what is included.

  • The driver’s name, vehicle and the route.
  • Break points and waiting time at the valley.
  • What happens if the road is slow or closed.
  • Whether the driver can message you in a language you use.

See our Sichuan seasons guide for timing, and our Sichuan region overview for the wider trip. Put the quote into the budget planner before you pay.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is a private car the best way to reach Jiuzhaigou?

It is the most flexible, because you can stop for photographs and rest. The rail line toward Jiuzhaigou is still partly operational, so check the current timetable before you commit. A car suits groups with equipment, seniors, or anyone who dislikes changing vehicles.

How long is the drive from Chengdu?

Plan most of a day for this leg, and do not schedule anything ambitious on arrival. Mountain roads, weather and stops all change the time, so ask the agency for a realistic estimate and a backup plan if the road is slow.

Do I need to book Jiuzhaigou tickets in advance?

Yes. Tickets are booked online in advance under real names, and there is no ticket window at the scenic spot. Have your passport details ready, book through the official channel and check the park's own site for the latest rules.

Will altitude be a problem?

It can be for some people. Chengdu is only about 500 m, while the valley climbs to about 4,500 m. Go up gradually, drink water, walk slowly and keep the first afternoon light. Speak to your doctor beforehand if a family member has a heart or breathing condition.

What is the best season for photographers?

It depends on what you want: spring greens, summer water colours or autumn leaves. Our Sichuan seasons guide goes month by month. Whichever season you choose, build one spare day in case of weather.
