Jiuzhaigou

Jiuzhaigou: Valley Gate, Songpan or Chuanzhusi

You want to enter the valley early, and you also want a bed that suits a slower body.

For a first visit, sleep at the valley gate so your entry is early and easy. Add a night in Songpan if you want a quieter town and a gentler pace. Choose Chuanzhusi only if your road plan makes it the natural stop.

It is normal to worry about a long drive, thin air and a small town with limited choice. A little planning solves all three.

Which base suits which traveller?

Think about timing, altitude and meals. Here is the comparison.

If you travel with seniors, sleep at the valley gate and keep the first afternoon free.

What should you know about timing and altitude?

Jiuzhaigou uses timed tickets with a daily limit of 41,000 visitors[1]. An early start is the simplest way to avoid the busiest hours. Our Jiuzhaigou Valley visit plan explains the bus loop.

The valley ranges from about 2,000 m to about 4,500 m in elevation[2], so walk slowly and rest often. Jiuzhaigou was closed to tourists after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in August 2017[3], so confirm opening and entry on the official channel before you go. UNESCO inscribed the valley in 1992[4].

How do you reach the valley?

Plan most of a day for the journey from Chengdu, whether by road or by a flight and transfer. Our Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou road route guide shows what a private car involves. Keep medicine, water and a warm layer in your day bag.

What if you eat halal?

Look for the green 清真 (qingzhen) sign and Hui-run restaurants, since the Hui avoid pork[5]. Ask what the kitchen uses, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

In February 2025 JAKIM removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so a Chinese label cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[6]. Check halal.gov.my. Carry snacks for the evenings.

What if someone feels unwell?

Rest, drink water and descend if you can. The ambulance number is 120[7]. Tell your host if breathing or headaches get worse.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is the valley gate the best base?

For an early entry, yes, because you avoid a long morning drive. The trade-off is a small choice of food and hotels in the evening. If a senior is with you, ask for a lift and a room that does not need steps.

Is Songpan too far for a Jiuzhaigou trip?

It is a longer drive each way, so it suits a slower route rather than a tight visit. Songpan is a good place for an extra night before or after the valley, not the only base.

How do I handle altitude?

Jiuzhaigou ranges from about 2,000 to 4,500 m. Walk slowly, drink water and take the bus loop at your own pace. If a parent has a heart or breathing condition, speak to the family doctor before you book.

Where can I find halal food?

Look for the green 清真 sign and Hui-run noodle and lamb shops, and ask about the kitchen. Choices are narrow in the small towns, so carry snacks. Muslim-owned does not mean certified.
