For the gentlest winter, choose Hainan if warmth matters most. Choose Guilin if you want scenery at a slow pace, and Xiamen if you like a walkable coastal city. None of the three asks for hard climbs or high altitude.
If cold air is the reason you are looking south, that makes good sense. Beijing averages about -3.7 C in January, against about 26 C in July[1]. Even a mild southern winter feels kind by comparison.
Which place suits whom?
Match the place to the person who will tire first.
| Place | What winter feels like | Pace | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hainan (Sanya) | The warmest of the three | Resort days, short walks | Grandparents and young children |
| Guilin | Milder than the north, with layers needed | Slow, scenic, river and hills | Couples and gentle walkers |
| Xiamen | Mild coastal air, a breeze off the sea | City strolls and an island | Seniors who like a café walk |
Why is winter a good season for the south?
Winter sits outside China’s main typhoon season, which runs from July to September, though typhoons can occur from May to December[2]. Hainan and Fujian are rated high risk for typhoons[3], so the quieter months suit them well.
Keep one spare day anyway. A storm or a cold, damp morning then changes your plan without ruining it.
When do holiday crowds matter?
Lunar New Year’s Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027[4]. That is the date on the calendar, not the official holiday window, so do not assume your travel dates until the schedule is out.
When we checked on 19 October 2026, no State Council notice for the 2027 mainland holiday schedule had been found, and it is normally published in early to mid November[5]. Check again before you book, and expect busier trains and hotels around the holiday.
How do you get there from Malaysia?
Malaysia Airlines said in July 2026 that it serves nine China-region gateways, and Xiamen is one of them[6]. For Hainan, 9 Air launched Haikou to Kuching in November 2025 on a twice-weekly basis[7].
Hainan Airlines flight HU477 from Haikou to Penang was set to start on 11 October, flying Wednesdays and Sundays[8]. Whether it began is worth confirming with the airline, because schedules change. Guilin is easiest as a train or short flight add-on from Guangzhou, a link covered in our Guilin and Yangshuo overview.
Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa[9]. Confirm the rule on the official source before travel.
How do you keep the pace gentle for seniors?
Guilin sits at about 153 m above sea level[10], and Yangshuo at about 137 m[11], so altitude is not a concern. Keep one base in each place, and keep every afternoon light.
Save 120 for an ambulance on your phone before you travel[12]. China has no single 911-style emergency number, and operators mostly speak Mandarin[13]. Ask your hotel front desk to help in an emergency.
What should you do next?
Read the Sanya winter resort guide for families if warmth wins, or Xiamen and the Fujian tulou if you prefer a city. To compare with staying north, see North China in winter versus the south.
When you have a draft plan, the pace checker shows whether it is too tight for your slowest walker. Browse the regions topic page for other options.
