Winter

North China Winter or a Southern Escape

You like the idea of snow, but Mum feels the cold: let us choose together.

If you or a parent feel the cold easily, choose a warmer southern escape. If you are curious about snow and everyone is fit, Beijing is the gentle northern start and Harbin the strong one.

It is a fair worry. Winter in the north is a different kind of cold from anything in Malaysia, and the warm places can feel like the sensible answer.

How do the four options compare?

Judge each option by who is travelling, not by the photos.

OptionWhat it feels likeSuitsWatch out for
BeijingCold, dry, clear days and quieter sightsFirst-timers, couples, teenagersCold air and long outdoor queues
HarbinDeep winter, ice and snow showsFit adults who want snowExtreme cold, slippery paths
HainanBeach holiday, warm sea airFamilies, seniors, return visitorsCloud and rain on some days
KunmingMild, spring-like, easy walkingSeniors, slow walkersCool evenings, a sun that feels strong

Beijing averages about -3.7 C in January and 26 C in July, with very dry winters[1][2]. Kunming is milder, averaging roughly 9 C in January[3].

What does Harbin ask of you?

Harbin is a trip for people who want ice. The Beijing to Harbin high-speed line opened on 22 January 2021 and runs at up to 350 km/h over about 1,198 km[4]. Plan most of a day for that leg and check the time on 12306.

Read our Harbin ice festival guide before you decide. Seniors and small children usually do better skipping it.

How do you reach the warm side from Malaysia?

Hainan Airlines flight HU477 from Haikou to Penang was set to start on 11 October, flying Wednesdays and Sundays, though we could not confirm it began[5]. 9 Air launched Haikou to Kuching in November 2025 on a twice-weekly basis[6]. AirAsia began Kunming to Johor Bahru on 15 December 2025[7]. Confirm every schedule with the airline.

For help choosing between Hainan towns, see our Sanya versus Haikou guide.

When should you avoid winter dates?

Avoid the Spring Festival week. The 2026 holiday ran 15 to 23 February[8], and Lunar New Year’s Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027[9]. The official 2027 holiday window had not been published when we checked in October 2026[10].

Winter is outside the main typhoon season, which runs July to September[11].

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Beijing too cold for seniors in winter?

It can be. Beijing averages about -3.7 C in January, and winters are very dry, so cold air tires the throat and skin. If a parent feels the cold, choose a shorter stay, indoor sights such as museums, and a hotel close to the metro. A warmer region is the gentler option.

Is Harbin worth it for a first China trip?

Harbin is a special-interest trip. It suits people who truly want ice and snow and can handle extreme cold. For a first visit, Beijing gives more variety in a milder setting. Keep Harbin for a return trip once you know how everyone copes with the cold.

Which southern option is easiest from Malaysia?

Hainan has flights from Haikou to Penang and to Kuching, though schedules change. Kunming is mild in winter and has a route to Johor Bahru. Check the airline for your dates, and compare with a connection through a larger Chinese city.

Do southern places have bad weather in winter?

Winter is outside the main typhoon season, which runs July to September, so storm risk is lower. Weather still varies, so pack a light jacket and rain layer. Check the forecast a week before you fly and keep your first day plans flexible.
