A Sanya resort stay in the cooler months suits a family that wants warmth, a pool and few decisions. Pick one resort area, keep the days short, and treat outings as extras. The real work is choosing the right area and the right room.
You may be travelling with grandparents who tire easily and children who need constant snacks. That is a good reason to choose a resort that brings food, pool and bed under one roof.
When is the weather kindest?
China’s main typhoon season runs from July to September, although typhoons can occur from May to December[1]. A winter stay sits mostly outside the main window, but Hainan is still rated high risk[2], so check the forecast before you fly.
Pack light layers, sun cream and a hat. Sea breezes can feel cool in the evening, and the sun is strong by day.
Which resort area should you choose?
The areas differ in feel, so compare them before you book.
| Area | Feels like | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yalong Bay | Quiet, resort-heavy, one long beach | Families who want to stay put | Distance from the city |
| Sanya Bay | Closer to the city, shops and food | Mixed groups, short stays | Busier, less secluded |
Read the Sanya Bay versus Yalong Bay guide for the full comparison, and the resort versus city hotel guide if cost is a worry.
How do you get from the airport to the resort?
Plan the transfer before you land. A long flight and a taxi queue are hard on small children. Our Sanya Phoenix Airport transfer guide explains the options.
Hotels and resorts copy your passport at check-in, so bring the original for every family member[3].
What should you ask about the room?
Ask about bed sizes, because a family room may mean one large bed or two. Our family rooms and bed sizes guide explains what to expect. Also ask whether the resort has a lift, a shallow children’s pool and a kitchen that can warm milk or baby food.
What about halal meals?
Halal needs checking meal by meal. Look for the green Arabic sign and the characters 清真 (qingzhen), then ask about the kitchen and ingredients.
At a resort you cannot easily choose another kitchen, so ask before you book and bring snacks for the first day. Certification belongs to a specific kitchen, so confirm it on the spot. The Sanya halal food area guide explains where to look.
How do you stay in touch?
Google services and WhatsApp are blocked in mainland China[4]. Install offline maps and a translation app before you fly, and agree a meeting point so nobody is lost in the lobby.
What should you do next?
Choose your resort area first, then your room, then your outings. Use the cities hub for more area guides, and tell us your dates so we can help you decide.
