Choose Sichuan if your family wants city energy, food and pandas, and choose Yunnan if you want lakes, old towns and a gentler pace. Neither choice is wrong. The trick is to match the province to the people travelling, not to the prettiest photo.
It is fine to feel torn. You have limited leave, and every blog seems to praise both.
How do the two compare?
Here are the two provinces on the same terms.
| Sichuan | Yunnan | |
|---|---|---|
| Best known for | Chengdu, pandas, spicy food, mountains | Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, flowers |
| Feel | City life with natural day trips | Slow towns and open landscapes |
| Walking | Flat in Chengdu, steep in the mountains | Gentle in Dali, cobbled in Lijiang |
| Altitude | Low in Chengdu, high at Jiuzhaigou | Mild in Kunming, high in Shangri-La |
| Food | Famously spicy, easy to soften | Milder, with mushrooms and rice noodles |
| Best for | Foodies, families with children, photographers | Couples, parents, slow travellers |
Use this as a first filter, then read our guides for Sichuan and Yunnan.
What about altitude?
Altitude is the main safety difference. Lijiang’s Old Town sits at 2,400 m[1] and Shangri-La at roughly 3,160 m[2]. Jiuzhaigou Valley ranges from about 2,000 m to about 4,500 m[3].
Both provinces have easy low places and demanding high ones. Sleep at a lower stop before you climb, drink water and keep the first afternoon free. Our Yunnan altitude guide goes through it zone by zone.
Which has better weather?
It depends on your month. Kunming is mild, averaging roughly 9 C in January and roughly 19 to 21 C in July[4]. About 80 percent of Lijiang’s yearly rain falls between June and September[5].
Sichuan has its own pattern, and the best months differ by place. Read the Sichuan seasons guide before you fix dates.
How do you fly there from Malaysia?
Both are reachable, but check dates. When we checked in October 2026, AirAsia listed Kunming to Johor Bahru as AK1381, three times a week since 15 December 2025[6]. Malaysia Airlines said in July 2026 that its China gateways include Chengdu[7], and Penang’s government counts Chengdu among nine Chinese cities with direct flights[8].
Schedules shift, so confirm before booking. Our Chengdu flight options and Yunnan flights guide list what we have confirmed. Malaysia and mainland China share one time zone[9], so there is no jet lag either way.
What should you know about sights and tickets?
Some sights need planning. Jiuzhaigou uses timed tickets with a daily limit of 41,000 visitors[10]. The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries were inscribed as a World Heritage property in 2006[11].
Book ahead in busy months, and carry your passport for any ticket that needs one. Malaysian ordinary passport holders can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa[12].
Where is halal food easier?
Neither province is simple, and both reward preparation. The Hui follow Islamic dietary laws and avoid pork[13], so Hui-run restaurants are the easiest start. Ask about the kitchen, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.
In February 2025 JAKIM removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so Chinese halal labels cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[14]. Check halal.gov.my before you rely on one.
How should you decide?
Pick Sichuan for food, pandas and families with children. Pick Yunnan for lakes, old towns and couples or parents who like a slow day. Use the circuit chooser to test your leave days against each province.
For other options, browse the regions topic page. When you share your dates and the ages in your group, we can suggest which province to visit first.
