You can fly to Chengdu from Kuala Lumpur without changing planes, and the city suits a first trip. When we checked in October 2026, Chengdu was on the nine-gateway list Malaysia Airlines gave[1]. The thing to plan carefully is not the flight but which airport you land at.
Group trips go wrong in small ways, such as two friends at different terminals. This guide helps you avoid that.
Who flies Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu?
Malaysia Airlines lists Chengdu among its nine China-region gateways[1]. Sichuan Airlines was also named as an existing Kuala Lumpur to China operator in April 2026[2].
Penang also counted Chengdu among its nine Chinese cities with direct flights[3]. If you do not start in the Klang Valley, see the Penang and Johor guide. Compare fares and the baggage allowance before you pay.
Which Chengdu airport will you land at?
It may be Tianfu or Shuangliu, so read your ticket. Tianfu opened on 27 June 2021 and is about 51 km southeast of downtown[4].
Chengdu Metro Line 18 links Tianfu Airport to Chengdu South station in about 40 minutes, or about 30 by express, running 5:55 am to 11:30 pm[5]. Line 19 has run since November 2023 and links Tianfu and Shuangliu in about 30 minutes by express[6]. Our Tianfu versus Shuangliu guide compares the transfers in full.
What if you land late?
Plan a car. The airport metro stops at 11:30 pm, so a late arrival with delays and luggage may miss the last train. Ask your hotel whether it can arrange a pickup, or hail a taxi from the official queue.
Foreign visitors commonly hail rides through the Alipay mini program, which needs no Chinese phone number[7]. Set it up before you leave Malaysia.
What is the first night like?
Easy on the body. Chengdu’s urban area is at about 500 m above sea level[8], so there is no altitude to manage on arrival. Spend the evening eating and resting.
If pandas are your priority, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was founded in 1987 with six rescued pandas[9]. Save the early morning for it on day two.
Where can you go next?
By rail. The Xi’an to Chengdu high-speed line opened on 6 December 2017, is 510 km long and cut the trip from about 16 hours to under three hours[10]. Chengdu East to Chongqing West takes roughly 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 minutes on typical fast trains[11].

What should you do next?
Fix the group’s dates, agree who confirms the flight, and add the tickets to the budget planner. The getting around topic page covers the rest of the transport plan.
