Choosing Your Season in Sichuan

You have limited leave and want the weather and the light on your side.

There is no single best month for Sichuan, because the province holds a low city and some very high valleys. Choose the season for the place you care about most, and then choose weeks away from China’s long holidays.

If you have limited leave and a camera or a family to look after, this is a worry worth settling before you book flights.

Which season suits which part of Sichuan?

Ask the season question region by region.

RegionHeightWhat to decide
ChengduAbout 500 mComfort in the city, so choose by crowds and rain
Mount EmeiSummit 3,099 mHow cold the top feels, so pack layers
SongpanAbout 2,867 mA cool base for the high valleys
JiuzhaigouAbout 2,000 m to 4,500 mCold, light, tickets and status

Chengdu’s urban area is at about 500 m[1], so the city feels like a city in every season. Mount Emei’s main summit is 3,099 m[2], so the top is much colder than the town below. Songpan county town is at about 2,867 m[3].

Jiuzhaigou ranges from about 2,000 m to about 4,500 m in elevation[4]. That range means a mild morning at the gate can turn cold higher in the valley.

What should you know about Jiuzhaigou?

Check its status before you plan around it, because Jiuzhaigou was closed to tourists after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake in August 2017[5]. Tickets are booked online in advance under real names, and there is no ticket window at the scenic spot[6]. Our Jiuzhaigou visit plan and Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong guide explain the day.

If you shoot landscapes, build in a spare day for cloud or rain. A single clear morning is too thin a plan.

How do China’s holidays change your plan?

Domestic crowds follow the official holiday calendar. In 2026 the Spring Festival holiday ran 15 to 23 February[7], Labour Day ran 1 to 5 May[8], and the National Day Golden Week ran 1 to 7 October[9].

As of 19 October 2026 no State Council notice for the 2027 schedule had been found, and it is normally published in early to mid November[10]. Lunar New Year’s Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027[11]. Wait for the official notice before you fix dates, and recheck our seasons topic page.

Where do you go if you want a quiet season?

Pick weeks outside the holiday windows and keep Chengdu as your base, because it suits more than one season. Add Emei and Leshan as a short add-on using our Emeishan and Leshan region page. If you are tempted by the high west, read the western Sichuan guide first, because altitude changes the whole plan.

What should you do next?

Questions Malaysians ask

When is the best time to visit Sichuan?

It depends on the region. Chengdu is a low-altitude city and works in more than one season. The high valleys are where the season matters most, so check the forecast, pack layers and avoid China's long holidays if you want quieter paths.

Is Jiuzhaigou worth the trip in any season?

It can be, but it rewards planning. The valley ranges from about 2,000 m to about 4,500 m, tickets are booked online under real names, and weather changes quickly. Check the park's official channels for current status before you commit.

Should we avoid Chinese public holidays?

If you can, yes. Domestic travel peaks in the long holiday windows, such as the National Day holiday that ran 1 to 7 October in 2026. Choose weeks outside them for quieter paths, or book transport and tickets as early as the rules allow.

Can photographers rely on one month for the best light?

No single month works everywhere in Sichuan. Pick the place you most want to shoot, then choose the season for that place, and build in a spare day for cloud or rain so the whole trip does not depend on one morning.
