Yunnan climbs as you go north, so the order of your nights matters more than the length of your trip. Kunming is the gentle start, Lijiang is the middle step, and Shangri-La is the high one. Seniors and small children do best when the body has time between each step.
It is natural to worry. This guide shows where the altitude sits and how to keep the climb gentle.
What are the altitude zones in Yunnan?
Think of three zones for sleeping. We can source only some heights, so we name just those.
| Zone | Places | What we can say | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower | Kunming, Dali | Mild and easy; heights not given here | Seniors, toddlers |
| Middle | Lijiang Old Town | 2,400 m[1] | Most healthy travellers |
| High | Shangri-La city | Roughly 3,160 m[2] | Fit adults and older children |
| Viewing | Yulong Snow Mountain | Main peak 5,596 m[3] | Short visits, with care |
Sleeping altitude matters more than where you spend the day. A cable car ride is short, but a night at height is long.
Why does the order of stops matter?
The body adjusts with time. One travel-agency source on Tibet advises acclimatising one to two days in Lhasa, which lies at about 3,656 m, before going higher[4][5]. It is not medical advice, but the principle applies: go up in steps.
In Yunnan that means Kunming or Dali first, then Lijiang, then Shangri-La. The Lijiang to Shangri-La railway, opened in November 2023, takes about 1 hour 20 minutes[6], so you climb quickly. Spend a full night in Lijiang before you do it.
How should seniors plan?
Choose low sleeping altitudes and short days. For a gentle trip that means two nights in Dali and two in Lijiang, with Shangri-La left for another trip. High-speed trains link Kunming and Lijiang in about 3 to 3.5 hours[7], so the move is comfortable.
Ask the family doctor three things before you book: is altitude safe for my condition, what medicine should I carry, and what signs mean go down. Keep medicine in your hand luggage. Our seniors guide and the slow eight-day plan show a pace that works.
How should families with children plan?
Keep the first afternoon at a new altitude free, and offer water and snacks often. Children tire quickly and may not say they feel unwell. Watch for a sudden quiet mood, headache or refusal to eat.
If a child has asthma, a heart condition or a recent illness, ask the paediatrician first. The family itinerary builds in rest days, and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain page explains the cable car and timing.
What should you do if someone feels unwell?
Stop, rest, drink water and go no higher. If symptoms worsen, go down and ask the hotel to call for help. Dial 120 for an ambulance[8].
Save the number of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Kunming, +86 871 6316 5088[9]. Keep your travel insurance details where everyone can find them.
What should you do next?
List the ages and health notes in your group, then pick your highest night. Read the Yunnan overview, and compare the shape of the route on the regions topic page. When your plan is ready, the pace checker shows whether any day is too heavy.
