If first light on the Li River is your goal, sleep in Xingping. If you want more food, more transport and a lively evening, stay in Yangshuo town and accept an earlier start. Return visitors can lean towards Xingping, since they already know the town centre.
Choosing a base for a photo trip is different from choosing for a family holiday. The best view usually costs you something in convenience.
How do the two bases compare?
Here is the comparison by what matters at dawn and after dark.
| Xingping | Yangshuo town | |
|---|---|---|
| First light | Close to the river and viewpoints | A transfer before dawn |
| Evenings | Quiet, small choice | Lively, wide choice |
| Transport | Fewer cars, so arrange a driver | Easy taxis and buses |
| Halal and plain meals | Narrow choice, bring snacks | Wider choice |
| Best for | Photographers and slow mornings | A mix of food and sights |
If you want both, spend one night in each. It costs a short transfer and an extra bag move.
What do you get in Xingping?
You wake close to the water. The karst hills around Guilin and Yangshuo are part of the South China Karst, inscribed in 2007 and extended in 2014[1]. In Xingping you see that landscape without the town noise.
Read our Xianggong Hill and Xingping viewpoints guide for which spots to visit and how early to rise. Our Li River cruise guide shows which stretch of the river suits your pictures.
How do you get around?
Foreign visitors commonly hail Didi through the Alipay mini program, which charges the linked Alipay account and needs no Chinese phone number[2]. In a small town, cars are fewer after dark, so agree a pickup with your host or driver. Our private driver guide for Guilin explains how.
Apple Maps still works in mainland China, even though Google Maps is disrupted[3]. Cash is legal tender, and merchants are urged to accept it[4], so carry a little for small stalls.
What if you eat halal?
Look for the green 清真 (qingzhen) sign and Hui-run restaurants, since the Hui avoid pork[5]. Ask what the kitchen uses, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.
In February 2025 JAKIM removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so a Chinese label cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[6]. Check halal.gov.my. Yangshuo town is the safer place for your main meals.
What if you need help?
Save the emergency line of the Consulate General of Malaysia in Nanning, +86 159 7778 3818[7].
