For a first visit, sleep near the Two Rivers and Four Lakes in the city centre. You can walk to the evening scenery, find dinner nearby and still reach the station by taxi. A station-side hotel makes sense only when your train is very early or very late, or when the room price truly saves you money.
It is normal to worry that a central room costs more. The honest answer is that the saving is small if you then spend it on taxis every evening.
Which Guilin base suits you?
Pick by your first evening and your last morning. Here is how the two areas compare.
| Area | What it feels like | Suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two Rivers and Four Lakes | Lakeside paths, lit pagodas and the old centre close together | First-timers, couples, parents who like a stroll | Higher room prices in busy months |
| Near a train station | Practical streets, easy departures | Budget travellers, early trains, one-night stops | Fewer sights on foot, more taxis |
If you stay two nights or more, the lakes area is usually the happier choice.
How do you check which station you will use?
Guilin has more than one railway station, and the one on your ticket may not be the one nearest your hotel. Check the departure station on 12306 or your booking before you choose.
Our Guilin North station guide covers the fast-train side. Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance ticket and to pass the platform gates, so keep it within reach[1].
How long does a station morning take?
Longer than you expect, with a bag and a family. Expect X-ray bag checks at the entrance, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[2].
If you head on to Guangzhou, high-speed trains from Guilin take roughly 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes depending on the train type[3]. A hotel that a taxi can reach at the door removes most of the stress.
Where does a budget traveller really save?
Not always on the room. A cheaper bed far from everything can cost more in rides, time and tiredness.
- Compare the room price with two or three taxi rides a day.
- Choose breakfast included if you leave early.
- Skip a hotel that needs a long climb with bags.
- Keep one flexible evening for rain.

Why is the landscape worth the effort?
Guilin sits within the South China Karst, inscribed by UNESCO in 2007 and extended in 2014 to include Guilin among its clusters[4]. Most of the dramatic hills lie outside the city, so your hotel is a base, not the attraction. Read the Guilin and Yangshuo region overview to plan the countryside days.
What about halal food?
Plan halal meals one by one. Look for the green Arabic sign and 清真 (qingzhen), and ask Muslim-run places about their kitchen. In February 2025 JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so a Chinese label cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[5]. What is the next step?
Decide your first night, then decide whether the second base should be Yangshuo. The guide to Guilin and Yangshuo hotels helps with that, and the cities topic page lists our other area guides.
