Dividing Your Days Between Guilin and Yangshuo

You have limited days and two famous names, and you do not want to rush either.

For most Malaysians, the answer is simple: give Yangshuo more time than Guilin. Spend one night in Guilin for the city sights and an easy arrival, then two or three in Yangshuo for the river, the countryside and slow evenings.

It is normal to feel torn. Both names appear in every photo of Guangxi, and a short holiday does not stretch to both.

What does each place give you?

Guilin is the city: lakes, pagodas and a good place to land. Its main landmarks include Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake[1].

Yangshuo is the countryside town: rivers, cycling lanes and quiet evenings. The famous karst scenery here belongs to the South China Karst, inscribed by UNESCO (the United Nations heritage agency) in 2007[2].

How do they compare?

Use this as a quick decision aid.

Neither place has an altitude concern, so grandparents can relax on that point.

How should you split three, four or five days?

Let the number of days decide the split.

  • Three days: land in Guilin, go straight to Yangshuo, and spend two nights there.
  • Four days: one night in Guilin, then two nights in Yangshuo.
  • Five days: one night in Guilin, three in Yangshuo, and one slow day for rain or rest.

Keep the Li River cruise on its own day. The river is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[5]. Read our Li River cruise guide before choosing a boat.

Who should choose which?

If you have grandparents, spend more time in Yangshuo’s quiet corners and keep Guilin short. If you have young children, add a bamboo raft and a gentle cycling day, as in our Yulong River guide. First-timers who like variety can add a second Guilin night.

Yangshuo West Street received over 21.1 million tourists in 2023, with Chinese and English signage[6]. That helps non-Mandarin speakers, but the street is busy at night, so choose a quieter base if sleep matters.

How do you move between the two?

Plan the move as half a day, not an afterthought. Read our Guilin to Yangshuo transport guide to compare bus, taxi and boat. The one or two hotels guide helps you decide whether to change hotels.

Guilin Liangjiang Airport is about 28 km southwest of the city centre[7]. If you also visit Guangzhou, Guilin to Guangzhou high-speed trains take roughly 2 hours 7 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes depending on train type[8]. Keep your passport with you, because stations check it.

What about halal food and prayer?

Look for the green Arabic sign and 清真 (qingzhen), and favour Hui-run noodle shops. The Hui avoid pork[9]. In February 2025 JAKIM (Malaysia’s Islamic development department) removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies[10], so check halal.gov.my.

Plan your main halal meals in Guilin, carry snacks for the river day, and pray at your hotel before and after.

What should you do next?

Fix the number of nights first, then book the cruise and the transfer. Browse the attractions topic page for similar stops. Our first-timers five-day plan shows one way to lay it out.

If you tell us the number of days you have and who is coming, we can suggest a Guilin and Yangshuo night-split that keeps the Li River day unhurried.

Questions Malaysians ask

How many nights should we give Guilin and how many Yangshuo?

For most first trips, give Yangshuo more. One night in Guilin is enough for the city's landmarks and an easy arrival, then spend two or three nights in Yangshuo for the river, the countryside and slow evenings. Add a Guilin night only if you land late or want more city time.

Is the Li River cruise a Guilin or a Yangshuo activity?

It joins them. The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km. Choose a boat that suits your pace, and plan the day around the cruise rather than adding sights on either side.

Is Guilin worth a stop, or should we go straight to Yangshuo?

If you only have three days, you can fly into Guilin and go straight to Yangshuo, since the airport is about 28 km from the city centre. If you have four or more, one night in Guilin gives you the city landmarks and a gentler start.

Which suits seniors better?

Both sit low, with Guilin at about 153 m and Yangshuo at about 137 m, so there is no altitude concern. Seniors tend to prefer a quieter Yangshuo base outside the busiest street, with Guilin for short city sights and a rest.

Can we do Guilin and Yangshuo with halal meals?

Yes, with planning. Look for the green 清真 sign and Hui-run noodle shops, and ask about the kitchen. A Chinese halal label does not automatically meet Malaysian recognition, so check halal.gov.my. Guilin is the bigger city with more choice, so carry snacks for the river day.

Do we need Mandarin?

Not necessarily. Yangshuo's West Street carries Chinese and English signage, which helps. Save your hotel name and address in Chinese, download an offline translation app and keep your passport handy. A Mandarin-speaking relative helps, but is not required.
