You can enjoy Yunnan on a first visit without Mandarin if you prepare your phone, your hotel names and your payments before you fly. This six-day route has short days, easy rail legs and two nights each in Dali and Lijiang.
It is normal to worry about being lost in a place where you cannot read the signs. Most of that worry goes away with a few small preparations.
Who is this route for?
It suits first-timers and families who do not speak Mandarin and want a calm trip with room to rest. It leaves out Shangri-La on purpose. If you want a wider view, read the Yunnan five-day Dali and Lijiang plan.
Route at a glance
- Day 1: Land in Kunming.
- Day 2: Train to Dali.
- Day 3: Full day in Dali.
- Day 4: Move to Lijiang.
- Day 5: Full day in Lijiang.
- Day 6: Depart.
What should you set up before you fly?
First your phone. Google services, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and similar apps are blocked in mainland China[1], while Apple Maps still works[2]. Amap (Gaode) added English in 2025, so check it in the app[3].
Then payments. Visa, Mastercard and other major cards can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[4]. Authorities also stress that renminbi cash is legal tender[5], so carry some. Finally, save each hotel name and address in Chinese on your phone.
What should be on your Chinese card?
Keep a small card or phone note with the words you will need most. Show it to drivers, hotel desks and waiters.
- Your hotel name and address in Chinese.
- The next hotel or station, in Chinese.
- “No pork” and “halal” (清真), if you need them.
- Any allergy, written clearly.
- The phone number of your agent or local contact.
Day by day
Day 1: Land in Kunming
Kunming Changshui Airport is about 24.5 km northeast of the city centre, and the airport metro station sits under Terminal 1[6][7]. Show the Chinese hotel name to your taxi or transfer driver. Keep dinner simple. Hotels copy your passport at check-in[8].
Day 2: Train to Dali
Dali has a high-speed rail link to Kunming running about one train per hour[9]. Passports are needed for tickets and platform gates[10]. Arrive early for the bag check[11]. In the afternoon walk Dali Old Town.
Day 3: Dali at a slow pace
Spend the morning near Erhai Lake, at 1,972 m[12]. In the afternoon visit Xizhou or simply rest. Our Dali Old Town guide lists quiet corners and cafes.
Day 4: Move to Lijiang
Plan most of the morning for this leg. Lijiang’s Old Town stands at 2,400 m[13]. Check in and rest. Walk the lanes at dusk and eat early.
Day 5: A full Lijiang day
Visit Shuhe or Baisha in the morning, then relax. Keep the afternoon free. Shangri-La and the high peaks can wait for another trip.
Day 6: Depart
Allow plenty of time for the airport. Lijiang Sanyi Airport is about 28 km south of the city centre[14]. If you fly home from Kunming, leave early or fly out the day before.
How long are the travel legs?
Day 2 and Day 4 are half-travel days. High-speed trains between Kunming and Lijiang take about 3 to 3.5 hours[15], with Dali along the way. The station to Old Town transfer guides explain the last leg in each town.
Where should you stay?
- Kunming: close to the station for a simple morning.
- Dali: inside the Old Town, so evening walks are easy.
- Lijiang: the edge of the Old Town, where a taxi can reach the door.
How can you adapt it?
- Seniors: add a night in Dali and shorten the Lijiang day.
- Children: keep every afternoon light.
- Halal meals: look for the green 清真 sign and ask about the kitchen. Hui-run restaurants avoid pork[16].
- A longer plan: see the classic seven-day circuit.
What should you book ahead?
Tickets for trains usually go on sale 15 days before travel[17], so ask your agent to handle them. Request a bilingual transfer sheet and a local contact who speaks your language. Save the Consulate General of Malaysia in Kunming: +86 871 6316 5088[18].
