From Lijiang station or airport, take a taxi, a ride app or an arranged pickup into the Old Town. If the lane is too narrow for the car, walk the last stretch. Keep the first evening quiet, because you are arriving at altitude.
If you are bringing parents, or you are travelling with a long list of worries about stairs and breathing, you are not alone. Lijiang is lovely, and a gentle arrival makes it more so.
How do you arrive in Lijiang?
You can arrive by high-speed train or by air. High-speed trains link Kunming and Lijiang in about 3 to 3.5 hours[1]. Flights from Kunming take about 30 minutes to Lijiang Sanyi Airport, which is about 28 km south of the city centre[2].
Both routes end with a road ride into town. Our guide to the Kunming, Dali and Lijiang route by rail explains the train side.
What are your options for the ride?
You have three simple choices: a taxi, a ride through an app, or a pickup from your hotel.
Taxi fares are metered and passengers pay the exact meter fare[3]. Foreign visitors can call Didi through the Alipay mini program, which needs no Chinese phone number[4]. Our hotel pickup guide helps you choose.
Will the car reach your hotel?
Not always. The Old Town has narrow, stepped lanes, so a car may stop at an entrance. Ask your hotel where to be dropped and whether staff can carry bags the last stretch.
If you have heavy cases, read our heavy luggage guide. A hotel at the edge of the Old Town is easier to reach with bags.
Where should you stay if you arrive by rail?
If you arrive late, or travel with seniors, a room that is easier to reach can matter more than a position inside the lanes. Our Lijiang station versus Old Town stay guide sets out the trade-off.
See our Lijiang Old Town guide for crowds, hours and quiet corners, and the Old Town versus Baisha guide for another base.
How do you handle the altitude on the first evening?
The Old Town of Lijiang sits at 2,400 m[5]. Walk slowly, drink water and keep dinner light. Skip anything strenuous until the next morning.
If a parent has a heart or breathing condition, speak to the family doctor before you book. Send us your arrival time and we can suggest a gentle first evening.
