Seasons

Yunnan in Winter or Summer

You can only take leave once, and you want the right weather for your family.

Winter is the calmer, clearer season in Yunnan, and summer is greener but wetter. The better one for you depends less on the calendar than on who is travelling and how high you will sleep.

If you are torn, that is a sensible place to be. Both seasons can give a lovely trip, and each asks for a different kind of packing.

What is winter like in Yunnan?

Winter is cold in the north and mild in Kunming. Kunming averages roughly 9 C in January[1], so a jacket is enough there. Shangri-La has cold but sunny winters[2], and it sits at roughly 3,160 m[3].

Lijiang’s Old Town sits at 2,400 m[4], so evenings feel cool even when the day is bright. Pack layers you can add and remove, and keep a warm hat in your day bag.

What is summer like in Yunnan?

Summer is the wet season. Kunming’s wet season runs from about May to October, peaking June to August, with July at roughly 19 to 21 C[1]. That is a relief for Malaysians who dislike heat.

About 80 percent of Lijiang’s yearly rain falls between June and September[5]. Shangri-La sees most of its rain over the same months[2]. Keep afternoons flexible and plan the outdoor highlight for the morning.

Which season suits which traveller?

Match the season to the person, not to the photo.

If your parents feel the cold, summer is kinder. If your family dislikes rain on holiday, winter is kinder, apart from the cold in Shangri-La. Our guide for seniors in Yunnan goes further.

When do Chinese holidays crowd the places?

Public holidays affect crowds more than the weather does. China’s official 2026 Spring Festival holiday runs 15 to 23 February, nine days[6]. The National Day Golden Week 2026 ran 1 to 7 October[7].

Lunar New Year’s Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027[8]. When we checked, no State Council notice for the 2027 holiday schedule had been found, and it is normally published in early to mid November[9]. Confirm the dates before you book flights.

How should you pack?

Pack for a day that starts cool and warms up, then drops again at night. Layers beat one thick coat.

  • A warm mid-layer and a windproof jacket
  • A light raincoat, useful in either season
  • Sun protection, since high places feel strong in the sun
  • Comfortable shoes with grip for wet stone

Ask yourself how everyone copes with altitude too. Our altitude guide explains the order of stops.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is winter too cold in Yunnan for Malaysians?

Kunming is mild, but Shangri-La has cold winters, and the Lijiang area cools down fast after sunset. Malaysians who rarely wear a coat should pack a warm layer, a windproof jacket, gloves and a hat. Dali and Lijiang are comfortable in the day with layers.

Is summer a bad time because of the rain?

Not necessarily, but plan for it. About 80 percent of Lijiang's yearly rain falls from June to September, so showers are likely. Carry a light raincoat, keep afternoons flexible and avoid long outdoor days that cannot move. Mornings are the easier part of the day.

Which season is better for seniors?

Mild days suit seniors best, and that depends on where you sleep. Winter makes Shangri-La harder to enjoy, while the wet months make steps and lanes slippery. Choose low sleeping altitudes in either season, and ask your doctor about altitude before you book.

When are the Chinese holiday crowds?

The 2026 Spring Festival holiday runs 15 to 23 February and National Day Golden Week ran 1 to 7 October. Lunar New Year's Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027. Official 2027 dates were not yet published when we checked, so confirm them before booking.

Can photographers get good light in both seasons?

Both work, in different ways. Winter is sunny in Shangri-La, which helps long views. Summer is greener but wetter, so patience matters. Pick the mood you want, then leave a spare day in each key place for the weather to change.
