For a first trip, treat Yunnan as three regions and pick one: the northwest for old towns and mountains, the centre for an easy arrival, or the south for a tropical change of pace. Most first-timers should take the northwest and use Kunming as the gateway.
It helps to stop thinking of Yunnan as one place. It is a province with very different weather, food and altitude in each part.
What are the three regions?
Here is the split we use, with the reader’s questions in mind.
| Region | Places | Feel | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central | Kunming, Stone Forest | Mild, easy, urban | Arrival, rest, food | Staying longer than needed |
| Northwest | Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La | Lakes, old towns, snow mountains | First-timers, couples, families | Altitude and cool evenings |
| South | Xishuangbanna, Jinghong | Tropical, green, humid | A warm second trip | Distance from the other two |
What is the central region like?
Kunming is mild and gentle. It averages roughly 9 C in January and roughly 19 to 21 C in July, with a wet season from about May to October[1]. It suits a restful first night.
AirAsia listed a direct Kunming to Johor Bahru route, flight AK1381, three times a week since 15 December 2025 when we checked in October 2026[2]. Confirm the schedule before you book. Our Kunming gateway guide helps you decide whether to stay or move on.
What is the northwest like?
The northwest is where most first trips belong. It links Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La by rail, and the altitude rises as you head north.
High-speed trains link Kunming and Lijiang in about 3 to 3.5 hours[3]. Lijiang’s Old Town sits at 2,400 m[4]. The Lijiang to Shangri-La railway opened in November 2023 and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes[5]. Shangri-La itself is roughly 3,160 m[6], so sleep in Lijiang first.
What is the south like?
The south is tropical and quite unlike the northwest. Ask your agency or the airline for current journey times and check a weather forecast close to your dates. Treat it as its own holiday or a flight add-on rather than a stop on the same loop.
If the south tempts you, read Xishuangbanna versus northwest Yunnan before you decide.
How do you pick for your group?
Pick by who is travelling. Grandparents and small children do best with Dali and Lijiang and a low sleeping altitude. Fit adults can add Shangri-La. Anyone who wants warmth in winter may prefer the south.
Test your plan with the pace checker, and decide whether you need one base or several.
What should you do next?
Choose the region, then the order. Read the Yunnan overview for how the four famous names compare, and see the regions topic page for other parts of China.
