Shangri-La

Shangri-La: Dukezong Old Town or New Town

You want the old-town feel, but you also want a gentle first night at altitude.

For most families with parents, the newer part of Shangri-La is the easier first night, and Dukezong Old Town is the better place for a slow afternoon and evening. If you want only one base, choose the one with a lift and an easy walk to a taxi.

It is natural to worry about altitude and cold when someone you love is travelling. A calm first day solves most of it.

Which part of Shangri-La suits you?

Think in terms of ground, warmth and atmosphere. Here is the comparison.

WalkingSlopes, steps and cobblesFlatter, wider pavements

If you are travelling with seniors, sleep in the newer part first, then visit the old town in short outings.

How high are you going?

Shangri-La city sits at roughly 3,160 m[1], higher than Lijiang’s Old Town at 2,400 m[2]. It was renamed in 2001 after the land in the novel Lost Horizon[3].

Sleep in Lijiang first, walk slowly, drink water and keep the first afternoon free. If a parent has a heart or breathing condition, a short chat with the family doctor before you book is sensible. Our altitude guide goes through each zone.

How do you get there, and how is the weather?

The railway from Lijiang to Shangri-La opened in November 2023 and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes[4]. That makes a day trip possible, but a night stay is calmer for seniors.

Shangri-La has cold but sunny winters[5]. Ask about heating and hot water, and pack a warm hat and gloves for evenings. Our guide to Yunnan for seniors covers which regions are gentle enough.

What if you eat halal?

Plan meals before you are hungry. Look for the green 清真 (qingzhen) sign and Hui-run restaurants, since the Hui avoid pork[6]. Ask what the kitchen uses, and remember that Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

In February 2025 JAKIM removed the China Islamic Association from its list of recognised foreign halal certification bodies, so a Chinese label cannot be assumed to meet Malaysian recognition[7]. Check halal.gov.my, and keep snacks in your bag.

What if someone feels unwell?

Rest, drink water and do not climb further. Save 120 as the ambulance number[8] and tell your host if breathing or headaches get worse.

Questions Malaysians ask

Which is easier on seniors, old town or new town?

The newer part of the city is usually flatter and has lifts and wide pavements. Dukezong has sloping lanes and stairs. For a first night, choose a room that is easy to reach and has a lift, then visit the old town slowly in the afternoon.

Should we sleep in Lijiang first?

Yes, if you can. Lijiang's Old Town is at 2,400 m and Shangri-La is higher. A night in Lijiang lets the body adjust before the next step up. Keep the first Shangri-La afternoon free.

Will it be cold at night?

Winters are cold but sunny, so pack warm layers and a hat for the evening walk. Ask about heating and hot water before you book.

Can we find halal food?

Look for the green 清真 sign and Hui-run noodle and lamb shops, and ask about the kitchen. The choices are fewer than in larger cities. Muslim-owned does not mean certified, so check halal.gov.my.
