Shangri-La

Pudacuo National Park Beyond Shangri-La

Quiet lakes and forest boardwalks sit above a town that is already high.

Pudacuo National Park is a good choice for visitors who are already comfortable in Shangri-La and want a quiet, scenic half-day. If anyone is struggling with the altitude, a gentler day in town is the wiser choice.

It is a protected area of lakes, meadows and forest above Shangri-La, so expect cold air, open skies and little in the way of cafes.

What is it, and who does it suit?

It suits couples, photographers and fit travellers who enjoy quiet scenery more than crowds. Families with children can enjoy it if everyone is well and the walks stay short.

It is less suited to anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure concerns. Shangri-La city already sits at roughly 3,160 m[1], and the park is higher still.

How long does it need?

A half-day is enough for the main lakes, and a full day lets you walk without hurrying. Plan the park for your second day in Shangri-La, not your arrival day.

Allow time for the road in and out, and keep the evening free. Our altitude guide explains why a calm schedule matters.

How do you reach it?

Fly to Kunming, then continue to Lijiang. The Lijiang to Shangri-La railway opened in November 2023 and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes[2]. From Shangri-La, a hired car or driver is the practical way to reach the park.

Our Lijiang to Shangri-La road guide covers the road option, in case you prefer to drive the whole way.

When should you go?

Dress for cold in every season. Shangri-La has cold but sunny winters and most of its rain falls from June to September[3].

Winter brings clear skies but harsh cold, and some paths can be icy. Wet months make boardwalks slippery. Choose a morning start in either season.

Practical tips

Keep your first Shangri-La day light, and walk at half your normal pace. Drink water, skip alcohol the night before and turn back if anyone has a headache, dizziness or breathlessness.

  • Bring warm layers, gloves and a windproof jacket.
  • Carry snacks and a warm drink.
  • Wear shoes with grip.
  • Save the ambulance number, 120[4].

Where should you eat and pray?

Plan lunch in town. Look for the green Arabic sign and the characters 清真 (qingzhen), favour Hui-run kitchens, and ask about the cooking oil and ingredients. Muslim-owned is not the same as certified.

Pray at your hotel before and after the trip. Our guide for Shangri-La stays helps you choose a base with an easy morning.

What are the better options when?

If the altitude is already hard, spend the day in the old town and rest. If you want a snow-mountain view with an easier access, consider Meili Snow Mountain, but note it needs a long road trip.

Our guide for seniors in Yunnan lists the gentler regions.

How does it fit your route?

Pudacuo fits best into a longer Yunnan trip, where Shangri-La has two nights. The seven-day classic circuit shows how to place it.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Pudacuo suitable for seniors?

It can be, if the pace is slow and the group has already spent a night or two in Shangri-La. The park sits higher than the town, so short boardwalk walks and long rests suit seniors best. If a parent has a heart or lung condition, check with the family doctor first.

How long should we allow?

Allow a half-day at least, and a full day if you want to walk without hurrying. Keep the rest of the day free, because thin air makes people tire sooner than they expect, and the road back needs patience.

What should we wear?

Dress in warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves and sturdy shoes, even in the warmer months. The sun is strong and the weather can change quickly, so a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are also useful.

Can we get tickets ourselves?

Entry and park bus tickets are sold through official channels, and rules can change between seasons. Ask your hotel or a licensed agent to confirm the current process, and keep your passport handy for entry.

Where do Muslim travellers eat?

Food inside protected areas is limited and hard to verify, so carry snacks and plan a proper meal back in town. In Shangri-La, look for the green 清真 sign, favour Hui-run kitchens, and ask about ingredients and cooking oil.
