Sanya Hotel Prices, Seasons and Typhoons

You found a lovely resort room and want the date not to cost you twice.

Sanya hotel rates follow two things: how busy China’s holiday calendar is, and how the weather looks on your dates. Pick your week with both in mind and you protect your budget and your holiday.

It is easy to feel stuck here. One resort shows very different rates across two weeks, and the cheaper week is also storm season.

When are Sanya rates highest?

Rates rise when Chinese families are free to travel. The 2026 Spring Festival holiday ran from 15 to 23 February[1], and National Day Golden Week ran from 1 to 7 October[2].

Labour Day was another peak, running from 1 to 5 May[3]. Lunar New Year’s Day 2027 falls on 6 February 2027[4]. As of 19 October 2026 the 2027 holiday schedule had not yet been published[5], so check again in November before you lock dates.

If you can, travel just outside these windows. Rooms and flights both loosen up.

When is typhoon season in Hainan?

China’s main typhoon season is July to September, though typhoons can occur from May to December[6]. Hainan sits in the high-risk group, alongside Guangdong, coastal Guangxi and Fujian[7].

That does not mean every summer week is wet and windy. It means a storm can close a beach, ground flights or shut a resort pool for a day or two.

What should you ask before paying?

Put these five questions to the hotel or agent and keep the answers in writing:

  • Can the booking move to another date if flights are cancelled by a storm?
  • Does the rate allow free changes, and until when?
  • What happens if the resort closes its beach or pools?
  • Are meals and activities in the price refunded if they close?
  • Does your travel insurance cover weather delays?

A cheap non-refundable rate feels smart until a storm arrives. A slightly dearer flexible rate can save you a whole night if plans change.

Which area should you book first?

Dates matter, but so does the bay. Read how Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay and Dadonghai differ, and what an all-inclusive package really covers. If you are still choosing between cities, see Sanya or Haikou as your base.

For families heading south in winter, our Sanya winter resort guide goes through the practical details. More on lodging choices sits in the stays topic page.

What should you do next?

Shortlist two weeks. Ask for a flexible rate on each. Then compare the full cost with the flights, not just the room.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Sanya too risky in typhoon season?

Not necessarily. Typhoon season runs from July to September, but storms are spread across those months and most days are fine. The risk is a cancelled flight or a closed beach for a day or two. Book a flexible rate, keep a spare night, and read the cancellation wording first.

Why is Sanya so expensive during Chinese holidays?

Hotels price to demand. Spring Festival, Labour Day and National Day send domestic families to the beach, so rooms and flights tighten together. If your dates are flexible, shift by a few days and compare quotes in the budget planner.

Can I get a refund if a typhoon closes my resort?

It depends on the rate you booked and on the travel insurance you hold. Ask the hotel or agent in writing what happens if flights are cancelled or the resort closes, and keep the reply with your booking.

Is winter or summer better for a Sanya stay?

Winter suits travellers who want a cooler, calmer seaside, while summer is warm, wet and closer to home weather. Winter prices are shaped by the Chinese holiday calendar, so check each date rather than assuming.
