For your first booking, use an English booking site that you can pay for by card and read in your own language. Then check that the hotel accepts foreign guests before you pay.
It is common to feel lost when the apps your friends use do not work the same way in China. A short test removes most of the guesswork.
What three questions should I ask of any app?
Ask these before you enter card details.
- Does it show the full price, the cancellation terms and the check-in hours?
- Does it accept my card without a Chinese account?
- Can I contact the hotel through it?
An app that answers yes to all three is safe to start with. If an app fails the second question, find another before you spend time on the listings.
How do English sites compare with Chinese platforms?
Here is the practical difference.
| Type | Strength | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| English booking site | Familiar language, refund terms and card payment | Fewer small guesthouses |
| Chinese-language platform | More listings, local deals | May need a Chinese account or payment method |
| Hotel’s own page | Direct contact, sometimes direct terms | Hard to read without Mandarin |
Compare the same hotel on two of these before you book. Prices move with the season, so the budget planner is better than any figure we could print.
What about payment?
Hotel bookings on international sites use your normal card at booking. For the trip itself, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB (Japan Credit Bureau), Discover and Diners Club cards can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[1]. Authorities have told platforms to speed up the binding of overseas cards[2].
Set up Alipay before you fly, and keep your card as a fallback.
What if WhatsApp and Google do not work?
Google services and WhatsApp are blocked in mainland China[3]. This matters for hotel messages, because your usual channels may go quiet on arrival.
Use the message tool inside the booking app, or email. If you rely on a VPN, install it before arrival, since virtual private network (VPN) apps are blocked inside China[4].
What should I save before I fly?
Save the confirmation, the cancellation terms and the hotel’s address in Chinese, all offline. Hotels copy your passport at check-in, so carry the original[5].

What should you do next?
Pick one booking site, run the three-question test, and book one hotel to see how the process feels. Then book the rest.
Compare costs with the budget planner, and browse the booking topic page for more.
