Hotel costs

Is Changing Hotels Worth the Extra Cost?

Two hotels can look cheaper on paper, then cost you in other ways.

A second hotel looks cheaper when the room rate is lower, but the real saving is smaller than the booking page shows. Count transfers, bags and lost time before you decide.

This is a common worry for anyone watching the budget. You want the lowest total, not just the lowest nightly rate.

What does a hotel change actually cost?

Start with the visible costs, then add the hidden ones. The room rate is only the first line.

  • A transfer between the two hotels, by metro, taxi or train.
  • Bag help at both ends, where a bellhop may be involved.
  • A meal or two eaten in a rush on change day.
  • A lost half day, which is your sightseeing time.
  • Stricter cancellation terms, if the cheaper rate is non-refundable.

Hotels in China price in yuan, so convert each line to ringgit using one rate. The budget planner does this in one place.

How do I price the lost half day?

Think of it as one fewer morning of the trip. If you paid for a flight and a hotel to see a sight, a morning spent moving bags is a morning not seeing it.

You do not need a formula. Ask yourself whether the second hotel buys you something you could not do from the first. If the answer is no, the saving is not real.

When is the second hotel the cheaper choice?

It can be cheaper when the first city is expensive and the second is close to what you came for. It also helps when a train leg already moves you, so the hotel change costs no extra journey.

Train tickets usually go on sale 15 days before departure, so line up the hotel dates with your ticket dates[1]. Fix the trains first, then book the rooms to match.

What about tips and small extras?

Tipping is not customary on the Chinese mainland[2]. International-standard hotels may accept 20 to 50 yuan for housekeeping or bellhops, though it is never mandatory[3]. If you change hotels twice, keep a few small notes ready for bag help.

What should you do next?

Write both plans in one list with every cost beside them. Mark which hotel terms are refundable and which are not.

Then open the budget planner and enter today’s quotes, because prices move with the season. For the bigger picture, read our guide to the four-night hotel plan or browse the costs topic page.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is one longer stay always cheaper?

Not always. A second hotel can save money when the first is expensive and your sightseeing sits elsewhere. But add the transfer, the bag handling and the lost half day before you decide. Once those are counted, a single base wins in more cases than people expect.

Do I need cash for hotel staff?

Tipping is not customary in mainland China. International-standard hotels may accept a small tip for housekeeping or bellhops, and it is never mandatory. If you change hotels twice, bellhop help adds up, so budget a little for it.

How do I compare two bookings fairly?

Put both plans in one list: room cost, breakfast, transfer, bag help and any cancellation limit. Then add a note about what you give up, such as an evening or a morning. The budget planner lets you enter the quotes you are holding today.
