Leave the most buffer around the things you cannot move, such as a train, a timed ticket or the flight home. Everything else can flex around a late plane.
It is natural to feel nervous about this when you cannot read the airport announcements. A short plan made in advance takes most of the fear away.
Which parts of your trip need protection?
Rank each leg by what a delay would break. Here is a simple way to sort them.
| What waits on the flight | How costly a delay is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A train ticket on the same day | High | Leave a long gap or sleep near the station |
| A timed ticket or tour slot | High | Arrive the day before |
| An international flight home | Highest | Sleep a night near the airport first |
| A hotel check-in or a driver | Low | Message them and carry on |
Our guide to flight to train connections shows how long a gap to leave. For tight rail changes, see planning tight train connections.
What do you do in the first half hour?
Move in three steps. They keep you calm and in control.
- Check the airline app or the airport board for the new departure time.
- Tell your hotel, driver or host about the new arrival.
- If a train waits later, open the ticket app and see whether you can change it.
Keep your passport within reach, because train tickets and platform gates need it[1]. Save the airline’s customer service number before you fly.
How does season change the risk?
Weather is the biggest cause you can plan around. Hainan, Guangdong including Guangzhou and Shenzhen, coastal Guangxi and Fujian are rated high risk for typhoons[2]. Shanghai, Hangzhou and coastal Jiangsu are rated medium, mainly from flooding[3].
If you travel in those months, keep your dates a little flexible and read the forecast a few days ahead. Do not stack a fixed ticket on the day right after a coastal flight.
When is a train the safer choice?
For short legs between big cities, high-speed rail is a steady alternative, and it avoids the airport time on both ends. Read China rail versus domestic flight to compare them for your route.
If you must fly and arrive late, an airport hotel can save the next day. The day-room and layover guide explains the options.
What should you do next?
List your fixed points, add a buffer to each, and check that no two sit on the same day. The pace checker helps you see where your plan is too tight. If you are heading to Hainan, our Kuala Lumpur to Sanya and Haikou flights guide shows the extra care that route needs.
