For Hainan, first check whether a direct flight runs on your dates, then compare it with a one-stop route through another Chinese city. If everyone is tired easily, one extra stop is not always a bad trade: a calm connection can beat a long, early direct flight.
It is normal to feel unsure here. Airline lists change, and the rules for connecting inside China are not obvious.
What do we know about Hainan routes from Malaysia?
The picture is uneven, so plan around what you can confirm. When we checked in October 2026, Malaysia Airlines named nine China-region gateways: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Taipei, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Changsha[1]. Haikou and Sanya are not on that list.
Direct Haikou flights do exist from other Malaysian cities. Hainan Airlines flight HU477 from Haikou to Penang was set to start on 11 October, flying Wednesdays and Sundays[2].
9 Air launched Haikou to Kuching in November 2025, twice weekly[3]. Schedules move, so confirm on the airline site before you pay.
Which option suits your group?
Compare on energy, not only on the ticket. Here is a simple way to think about it.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct flight, if one runs | Children, seniors, short leave | Fewer departure times and limited dates |
| One stop in Guangzhou or Shenzhen | Flexible dates, wider choice | A connection to manage, bags to check |
| Fly to Haikou, then travel south | When Haikou is the only fit | Most of a day for the onward leg |
Read the Hainan comparison of Sanya and Haikou if you have not yet chosen a base. If beaches matter most, Sanya usually saves you the longest transfer.
How do you book it calmly?
Book legs on one ticket where possible. Use the airline’s own site or a trusted booking app, and follow our guide to booking domestic flights in China as a Malaysian.
- Enter names exactly as in the passport, with no nicknames.
- Keep the same booking reference for every leg.
- Ask whether bags are checked through to Hainan or must be collected at the connecting airport.
- Save the airline’s customer service line before you leave.
What does a realistic travel day look like?
Leave early and keep the day light. Reach the airport with time to spare, drop bags, pass security with your passport ready, and let children walk before boarding. After landing, move straight to your transfer rather than adding sightseeing on day one.
Our Sanya airport transfer guide covers the last leg to the resort areas. Typhoon season is a real risk for Hainan, which is rated high risk[4], so keep your dates flexible and read the weather before you go.
What should you do next?
Check your dates on two or three airline sites, then compare the total travel time, not only the fare. See Kuala Lumpur to China direct flights and flights from Penang, Johor and East Malaysia for other starting points. The budget planner lets you test each option with today’s quotes.
