May

Avoiding the Labour Day Crush

You found a cheap-looking May flight, and now you wonder why every hotel is full.

May is a good month in China, but its first week is a holiday crush. The official Labour Day break fills trains and hotels and lifts prices at the most famous places. If you can start your trip after that week, you keep the warm weather and lose most of the crowd.

Finding the prices climb after you have set your heart on a date is a common frustration. The fix is usually small.

When does the Labour Day holiday fall?

The 2026 Labour Day holiday ran 1 to 5 May, with Saturday 9 May as a make-up workday[1]. Travel starts a day or two before the break and ends a day or two after it. So the pressure on trains and roads is longer than the official days.

Dates are set each year. Check the public holiday calendar and the latest government notice before you pick flights.

What fills up first?

Trains and famous sights fill first, because their booking rules are strict. The table puts the main ones side by side.

Thing to bookRule to knowWhat to do
Train ticketsUsually on sale 15 days before departure[2]Set a reminder for the day your window opens
Forbidden CityOpens at 20:00 seven days ahead[3]Reserve at once, using your passport
Mutianyu Great WallReservable up to 15 days ahead[4]Book early, one ticket per document
BadalingDaily cap of 65,000 since 2019[5]Choose a weekday outside the break

Every Forbidden City visitor needs a real-name reservation, and walk-up entry is not available[6]. If the date you want is gone, move the visit, not the whole trip.

How do you plan May for a smaller budget?

The easiest saving is time, not effort. Hotels and flights respond to demand, so the holiday week costs more than the week after it. Prices move with the season, so use the budget planner with today’s quotes before you commit.

For longer legs, compare the options in the rail versus flight tool. During a holiday, a train sells out sooner than a flight, so checking both early gives you a choice.

What does May weather feel like?

May is warm across much of the country, and the south turns humid. In Yunnan, the wet season begins around May and runs to October[7], so pack a compact umbrella. Our June and July guide picks up from there.

If you came for blossoms, April is the better month, and the April guide explains why.

What should you do next?

Look at your dates and ask one question: do they sit inside the first week of May? If so, try moving the start by a week and keep the same cities. Then open the seasons topic page to compare other months, and message us if you want a second opinion.

If your dates are fixed around the early-May break, send them to us and we will show how to shift the route by a few days to avoid the worst of the crowds.

Questions Malaysians ask

When is the Labour Day holiday in China?

The 2026 holiday ran 1 to 5 May, with Saturday 9 May as a make-up workday. The government sets dates each year, so check the current notice before you book. The days before and after the break also feel busy as people travel home.

Is May a bad month to visit China?

No, only the first week is difficult. After the holiday, the weather is warm, prices ease and the crowds thin. If you can start your trip after the first week, May is a good choice for a budget-minded first trip.

How early should we book trains in May?

Tickets usually go on sale 15 days before departure, and holiday trains sell fast. Set a reminder for the day your window opens, and keep your passport details ready. Rules can change, so confirm on the official 12306 site or your booking app.

Are the Great Wall and Forbidden City harder to visit in the holiday?

Yes. Both need advance reservations, and the holiday brings far more visitors. Reserve as soon as your date opens and carry the passport you used to book. Plan your busiest sight for the quietest day of your trip.

Will prices be higher in the holiday week?

Hotels and some flights tend to rise as demand rises, so the holiday week is rarely the one that costs least. Prices move with the season, so use the budget planner with today's quotes. Moving your dates by a week often saves more than any other change.
