April

Is April Spring Right for You?

You want soft light and flowers for the photos, without a week of grey rain.

April is one of the kindest months in China: mild across the main regions, with flowers out and crowds still lighter than in summer. If you are a photographer or a couple who wants gentle light, it is a strong choice. Plan around the short Qingming holiday and carry a light layer for cool mornings.

You may worry that spring means rain every day. It does not, but it is wise to pack for a shower.

What does April feel like?

April is a transition month, so the weather changes more with the region than with the calendar. The north warms quickly after winter, central cities are cool and clear, and the south is warm and damp.

Yunnan is comfortable. Kunming’s wet season runs from about May to October[1], so April comes just before it. Check Yunnan weather by month for each town. For clothes, the tropical traveller’s weather guide is a short read.

Which regions suit spring photos?

Choose by the kind of scene you want, then check the crowd level.

West Lake in Hangzhou has been free to enter around most of its shore since 2002, though some sites inside still charge[2]. That makes an early morning walk an easy first stop. The attractions topic page lists more places to compare.

How does the Qingming break change your plan?

The 2026 Qingming holiday ran 4 to 6 April[3]. It is short, but families travel inside China during it, so early April is busier at famous places than the rest of the month.

For a quieter month, aim for the middle and the end of April. Use the holiday calendar to check the current dates before you book.

What should you book early?

Some places need a real-name reservation, and April is when they start to fill. The Forbidden City opens tickets at 20:00, seven days before the visit[4]. It is closed on Mondays except national holidays[5].

The ticket office on Duanmen Square opens 08:30 to 16:10 from 1 April to 31 October[6]. Treat the reservation, not the ticket office, as your plan.

What about air quality?

Spring in the north can bring dust and haze on some days. Our air quality guide explains how to read a daily reading and when to move an outdoor plan indoors. A light face mask in your bag costs little.

What should you do next?

Pick two regions at most for a first April trip, and keep one day free in each for weather. If you want to see the whole holiday picture, read the May guide next, because the crowds jump in the first week of that month. Then message us your dates and we will check the route together.

If flowers and calm light are the point of your trip, tell us who is going and which cities you like, and we will suggest a route that keeps the days gentle.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is April a good month for China?

Yes, it is one of the easiest. Temperatures are mild across the main tourist regions, flowers are out, and the heavy summer crowds have not arrived. The main thing to plan around is the short Qingming holiday at the start of the month.

When are the Qingming holiday dates?

The 2026 Qingming holiday ran 4 to 6 April. The government announces dates for each year, so check the latest notice before you book. Short holidays still fill trains and popular sights, even though they are brief.

Do I need a jacket in April?

Yes, bring a light jacket or a cardigan. Mornings and evenings can be cool, especially in the north and on the plateau, and showers appear without much warning. A compact umbrella and a layer you can remove are enough for most days.

Is it too early for Yunnan's warm days?

No. Kunming and Dali are comfortable in April, and the wet season has not started. Higher towns such as Shangri-La stay cool, so keep a warm layer in your day bag and read the Yunnan weather guide.

Where do I book the Forbidden City in April?

Only through the official Palace Museum mini-program, using the passport you will bring. Entry needs a real-name reservation and there is no walk-up entry. Tickets open seven days ahead, so set a reminder for the evening your date opens.
