Summer

Summer in China with Children

The school break falls in summer, and you wonder if the heat will be worse than home.

Summer in China is hot and wet in the lowlands and gentle on the high plateaus. For families from Malaysia, the heat is familiar, but the mix of dry heat in the north and heavy rain on the coast is not. Yunnan’s plateau is the easiest summer answer.

It is natural to worry about children in the heat. A few small choices make the days much easier.

How hot and wet does it get?

It depends on the region. Beijing gets most of its rain in summer, with July the wettest month[1]. The same city averages about 26 C in July, against about -3.7 C in January[2].

Kunming is cooler, roughly 19 to 21 C in July, though its wet season peaks from June to August[3]. About 80 percent of Lijiang’s roughly 968 mm of yearly rain falls between June and September[4]. See Yunnan weather by month for the detail.

Which places stay comfortable?

Height keeps places cool. Kunming stands at about 1,892 m[5], and Lijiang city at about 2,400 m[6]. Huangshan’s Lotus Peak reaches 1,864 m[7], so mountain air helps there too.

Higher towns need a little care. If anyone is elderly or has a heart or breathing condition, read the altitude guide first.

How do you plan days for children?

Build the day in three parts. Go outdoors early, rest indoors through the hot middle of the day, and return to a gentle walk or meal in the evening. Keep one buffer day in the week.

Our guide to toddlers and young children covers strollers, snacks and rest stops. Use the pace checker to test whether your plan is too busy.

What about holidays and typhoons?

The 2026 Dragon Boat Festival holiday was 19 to 21 June[8]. It is short, but trains and sights fill around it.

China’s main typhoon season runs from July to September[9], and the southern coast is the highest-risk area[10]. Our rain and typhoon guide shows how to build slack into a coastal trip.

What should you do next?

Check your school dates against the school holiday guide, then choose between a plateau trip and a short city break. If you are flexible, August and September may offer milder weather. Message us with the children’s ages and we will shape a route.

If the school holiday decides your dates, tell us how old the children are and we will suggest where the summer weather and pace suit them.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is China hotter than Malaysia in June and July?

Not always, but it feels different. Beijing reaches about 26 C on average in July, and the air can be dry or heavy depending on the day. Lowland cities in the south are hot and humid. Kunming and higher towns stay far cooler.

Where should families go in summer?

Look at Yunnan's plateau towns, which stay mild, and plan the lowland cities for early mornings. Keep each day short, with indoor time at midday. The pace checker helps you test whether your plan is too busy for small children.

Does it rain all summer?

Rain is part of the season, not the whole of it. About 80 percent of Lijiang's yearly rain falls from June to September, and Beijing's wettest month is July. Showers usually clear, so carry a light raincoat and plan indoor options.

When is the Dragon Boat holiday?

The 2026 Dragon Boat Festival holiday ran 19 to 21 June. The government sets dates each year, so confirm the current notice. It is a short break, but trains and popular sights are busier around it.

Should we worry about typhoons in July?

Only on the coast. China's main typhoon season is July to September, and the southern coast is the highest risk. Keep your plans flexible, avoid tight onward connections, and follow local weather alerts. Inland and plateau routes are less affected.
