A single supplement is the extra charge you pay for a room of your own on a package tour. Package prices assume two people share, so a solo traveller covers the second person’s part of the room. You can usually reduce it, but only if you ask before you pay.
If you are travelling alone, it is easy to feel penalised for a choice that is yours. The charge is not personal, and there are sensible ways to shrink it.
Where does the supplement come from?
A hotel charges per room, not per person. A twin room costs roughly the same whether one or two people sleep in it. The tour price divides that cost between two travellers. When only one person uses the room, the agency must still pay the hotel in full.
The supplement fills that gap. It is not a penalty, though it can still feel like one.
Where can it hide in a quote?
Check these four places before you compare prices.
- A separate line labelled “single supplement” or “single room”.
- A footnote that applies only to certain hotels or dates.
- A higher headline price for “single traveller”.
- An extra charge for an overnight train berth.
A quote that shows no supplement may simply be quoting for two sharers. Ask for the price for one person, in writing, with every night counted.
How can you reduce it?
There are four practical routes. Each has a catch.
| Route | What to ask | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Share with a stranger | Can you pair me with another solo traveller of the same gender? | A match is not certain |
| Choose off-peak dates | Is the supplement lower outside holidays? | Weather and crowds change |
| Pick a smaller hotel grade | What does a simpler hotel change? | See our hotel category guide |
| Join a smaller group | Does a smaller group cost less per room? | Fewer dates available |
Do this: write down the answer for each route, then compare them side by side in the package comparator.
Is a tour worth it for one person?
It depends on what you want from the trip. A tour takes care of transport, rooms and a guide. A trip you plan yourself costs less in some places and more in others, because a solo traveller pays full room price either way.
Put both versions in the budget planner. If the gap is small, the tour may be worth it for the company and the planning you do not have to do.
What if the quote has no supplement line?
Ask directly. A calm question is enough: “What is the price for one adult in a single room, per night and in total?” Compare the answer against another quote on the same basis, as described in our guide to comparing two tours.
