What a G Train Is in China

You see a G number on a timetable and want to know if it is the fast one.

A G train is China’s premier high-speed train. The letter G is printed before the train number on tickets and timetables.

G trains run at up to 300 km/h, and some run at 320 or 350 km/h[1]. That is why a long city pair can feel like a short day.

Where you will meet it on a trip

You will meet G trains whenever you move between big cities, such as Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai or Guangzhou. The fastest Beijing to Shanghai G trains are quoted at as little as 4 hours 18 minutes[2]. Treat that as a best case and check the live timetable.

One practical tip

Look at the stations, not only the train. Big cities have more than one high-speed station, and the one on your ticket may be far from your hotel. Check the station name on both the ticket and your hotel map before you buy.

Arrive early and keep your passport ready, because gates and bag checks take time. Our guide on station security shows what to expect.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is a G train the fastest train in China?

G trains are the premier high-speed tier, so for most city pairs they are the quickest ground option. A G number does not decide the exact journey time, because stops differ. Compare departure and arrival times on the booking app, not only the letter.

Do I need a passport to board a G train?

Yes. Foreign travellers use a passport to buy the ticket and to pass the platform gates, because travel is ticketless. Keep the same passport you booked with in your day bag, not packed in a suitcase, and carry it to the station gate.

Can I take a G train with a large suitcase?

Yes, bags go on racks and between seats, and there is an official limit per person. Bags are rarely weighed, but pack so you can lift your own case. Read our luggage guide before a family trip with more than two large cases.
