Booking China High-Speed Rail Tickets

You want the train sorted before you land, and the app seems to be in Chinese.

For a Malaysian visitor, the simplest plan is to verify your passport on 12306 and buy once your date is inside the sale window. Then carry the same passport to the platform. High-speed rail is easy once the ticket exists, so the effort is front-loaded.

It is normal to feel uneasy about an app in a language you cannot read. The steps below are short.

Can foreigners book online?

Yes. China State Railway Group announced on 28 November 2023 that foreigners with ordinary passports can verify their details and buy tickets online via 12306[1].

You verify by entering your name, nationality and passport number or by uploading a photo of the passport page[2]. Use the same passport name everywhere, since the ticket is tied to it.

How far ahead can you buy?

Train tickets usually go on sale 15 days before departure and cannot be bought earlier[3]. Some guides cite 30 days for certain platforms, so read the rule when you book.

If your trip is months away, you cannot buy now. Trip.com can accept pre-orders before the window opens, but it only attempts the purchase when China Railway releases seats[4]. Treat a pre-order as a request, not a confirmed seat.

What does the passport do at the station?

Foreigners must show a passport to buy a long-distance ticket and to pass the platform gates, because travel is ticketless[5]. Keep it in a pocket, not at the bottom of a suitcase.

Expect X-ray bag checks at station entrances, and arrive 30 to 40 minutes before departure at major stations[6]. Our guide to reading station signs helps you find the right gate.

Which train and seat should you pick?

G trains are the premier high-speed service, running up to 300 km/h with some at 320 or 350 km/h[7]. D trains are the next tier, either daytime trains with more stops or overnight high-speed sleepers[8].

ClassLayoutSuits
Second classCompact seats, 2+3 across the car[9]Most travellers and budgets.
First classLarger seats, 2+2 across, more legroom[10]Seniors and long legs.
Business classG trains only, reclining seats[11]Comfort-first travellers.

What about luggage?

The official limit is 20 kg for adults and 10 kg for children, with each item at most 130 cm, though bags are rarely weighed[12]. A bag you can lift into the rack yourself saves a worry.

What if the app does not work for you?

Try a second booking platform, ask a Mandarin-speaking relative to help, or have a licensed agency book the legs for you. Compare options in our booking apps guide.

Questions Malaysians ask

Can Malaysians buy tickets on 12306?

Yes. Foreigners with ordinary passports can verify their details and buy tickets online on 12306 since the November 2023 announcement. You enter your name, nationality and passport number, or upload a passport photo page. Confirm the current steps in the app before you rely on them.

How early can I buy a ticket?

Tickets usually go on sale 15 days before departure and cannot be bought earlier. Some guides cite a different window for certain platforms, so check the rule on the day you plan to book. For busy dates, set a reminder for the morning sales open.

Do I need to collect a paper ticket?

Travel is ticketless, so your passport is the ticket. Show it at the gate and keep the booking handy. If the machine does not read your passport, staff at the station can help.

Which seat class should I choose?

Second class suits most travellers and most budgets. First class gives larger seats with more legroom, which helps seniors on a long leg. Business class exists on G trains only. Look at the legroom first, then at your budget.
