What a D Train Is in China

A D number shows up on the only train that fits your day, and you wonder what you are buying.

A D train is the second tier of China’s fast trains, one step below the G trains. You will see the letter D before the number.

D trains come in two kinds: daytime trains with more stops, or overnight high-speed sleepers[1]. The letter alone does not tell you which one you have, so read the departure time.

Where you will meet it on a trip

A D train appears when a G train does not run on your route or at your time. It also appears on some longer legs where an overnight service replaces a hotel night. For comparison, G trains run at up to 300 km/h, and some run at 320 or 350 km/h[2].

One practical tip

Compare the whole journey, not the top speed. A D train with fewer minutes of waiting at the station can beat a faster train that leaves at an awkward hour. For an overnight service, check how you will feel the next morning, especially with grandparents or small children.

You still need a passport to book and board, and you should reach the station early. Our sleeper train guide covers the overnight option in detail.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is a D train slower than a G train?

The journey usually takes longer, because a daytime D train makes more stops than a G train. The gap depends on the route, so compare the departure and arrival times on the booking app. On some routes the difference is small enough that the timing matters more than the letter.

What is an overnight D train?

Some D trains are high-speed sleepers that run overnight, with berths instead of seats. They can save a hotel night on a long leg. Check the berth type, the boarding time and the arrival time before you commit, and read our sleeper train guide first.

Can I book a D train on the same app as a G train?

Yes. Both appear on the official rail app and on third-party booking apps, using the same passport-based process. Search the city pair, then filter by train letter if you only want G or D. Always confirm the seat class shown for that exact train.
