Yunnan itinerary

Tengchong and Baoshan Beyond the Usual Loop

You have done Dali and Lijiang, and now want a Yunnan that feels like a discovery.

Tengchong and Baoshan make a quiet, rewarding week for return visitors, if you accept long transfers and a smaller tourist infrastructure. The reward is hot springs, volcanic landscapes and an old town with a story.

If Dali and Lijiang are behind you, the feeling that you want something newer is a good sign. This plan gives you that, with rest days built in.

Who is this route for?

It suits return visitors, history lovers and travellers who prefer quiet places. It does not suit anyone who dislikes long drives. If you are weighing it against a bigger loop, the ten-day grand circuit shows the other approach.

Route at a glance

  • Day 1: arrive in Kunming.
  • Day 2: travel to Baoshan.
  • Day 3: Baoshan old town, then on to Tengchong.
  • Day 4: Heshun ancient town.
  • Day 5: hot springs and volcano.
  • Day 6: return towards Kunming.
  • Day 7: fly home.

Day by day

Day 1: Arrive in Kunming

Kunming sits at about 1,892 m above sea level[1]. Check in, eat dinner and sleep early, because tomorrow is a travel day.

Day 2: Travel to Baoshan

Plan most of the day for this leg. Compare road, rail and a short flight, and choose what suits your group. Arrive in Baoshan in the evening and walk to a local dinner. Carry the original passport when you check in, since hotels copy it for registration[2].

Day 3: Baoshan, then Tengchong

Spend the morning in Baoshan’s old town, which gives a feel for the region’s trading past. Eat lunch and continue by car to Tengchong in the afternoon. The road is the longest of the day, so rest at the hotel in the evening.

Day 4: Heshun ancient town

Heshun is the village most visitors come for, with old houses, a library and quiet ponds. Walk early, before groups arrive, and take a long lunch. Return in the late afternoon for a gentle walk by the water. Ask your driver about the memorial sites near Tengchong that recall the wartime years, and visit them quietly.

Day 5: Hot springs and volcano

Visit a volcanic landscape in the morning, when the air is clear. Wear closed shoes and carry water. In the afternoon, soak in a geothermal spring and rest. Skip the pools if anyone has a heart condition.

Day 6: Return towards Kunming

Leave after breakfast. Choose road, rail or a short flight, depending on your timing. Plan most of the day, and arrive in Kunming for dinner and sleep.

Day 7: Fly home

Leave extra time for the airport, and book an afternoon or evening flight.

Understanding the border area

Tengchong lies near the Myanmar border. Do not plan to cross, and do not wander off the marked tourist routes. Ask your hotel which sights are open, and follow local notices and police instructions without argument.

Staying connected

WhatsApp and Google services are blocked in mainland China[3]. Download offline maps and a translation app before you fly. Carry cash for small shops, since renminbi cash is legal tender and merchants are urged to accept it[4].

Where to stay

In Baoshan, choose a hotel near the old town. In Tengchong, stay near Heshun for a quieter feel, or in the town for more restaurants. Ask about hot-spring access and a lift for bags before you book.

How to adapt it

  • Shorter: skip Baoshan and go straight to Tengchong, accepting a longer day.
  • Longer: add a night in Heshun.
  • Gentler: use a private car for every transfer.
  • With a pairing: combine with Dali using the western Yunnan guide.

What to book ahead

Book the transport between Kunming, Baoshan and Tengchong first, because choices are narrower than on the main loop. Reserve a driver for Day 5. Test the whole plan on the pace checker.

Budget lines

Count flights, transfers, hotels, entry tickets, hot-spring fees and meals separately. Prices move with the season, so the budget planner lets you plug in today’s quotes. Browse the itineraries topic hub for other routes.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is Tengchong easy for Malaysians who do not speak Mandarin?

It is a smaller destination than Lijiang, so prepare more. Save your hotel address in Chinese, download an offline translation app, and carry a bilingual transfer sheet. A private driver for the longer days takes most of the stress away, and our team can prepare a route sheet.

How long do we need between Kunming and Tengchong?

Plan most of a day for the leg, whether you go by road, rail or a short flight where one runs. Check 12306 and the airlines for your dates. Do not schedule anything else on the arrival day, and keep the same cushion on the way back.

Can we visit the border area?

Treat the border as a boundary, not a sightseeing stop. Do not plan to cross, follow local signs and ask your hotel or driver which areas are open to visitors. Carry your passport at all times, and respect any police or military notices you see on the road.

What should we expect from the hot springs?

Expect geothermal pools and steam fields, with a rotten-egg smell near the vents. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and sandals, and shower afterwards. Skip the pools if anyone has a heart condition or is pregnant, and drink water. Opening hours and prices vary by site, so ask your hotel.
