Itinerary

A Quiet Guilin and Yangshuo for Two

You are travelling as a couple and want romance that is calm, comfortable and unhurried.

Spend a night by the lakes in Guilin, take the river to Yangshuo, then slow down for three nights among the hills. The day-by-day plan below keeps one highlight a day and leaves the rest open.

You may be worried that China means rushing, queues and tour flags. This route avoids that: the places are small, the pace is walking pace and you can choose a quiet hotel away from the main streets.

Who is this route for?

It suits couples, honeymooners and anniversary trips, including those who have not travelled in China before. Guilin is at about 153 m[1] and Yangshuo at about 137 m[2], so altitude is not a concern for either of you. South China Karst spans four provinces and municipalities: Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan[3], and Guilin is part of the Guangxi cluster.

What does the route look like?

  • Day 1: arrive in Guilin, an easy evening by the lakes
  • Day 2: Li River cruise to Yangshuo
  • Day 3: countryside, bamboo raft and a sunset viewpoint
  • Day 4: Xingping outing or a free day
  • Day 5: slow breakfast, transfer and flight

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and wander

Land at Guilin Liangjiang Airport, about 28 km southwest of the city centre[4]. Guilin’s main city landmarks include Elephant Trunk Hill and the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Shanhu Lake[5]. A slow walk around the water is enough, then dinner and rest.

Day 2: the river together

The Li River is 164 km long, and the Guilin to Yangshuo stretch is about 83 km[6]. Take a morning boat, sit on the open deck for the first hour and then inside if the sun is strong. Read the Li River cruise guide to choose a section. After checking in, take a short evening walk, but save West Street for later in the stay.

Day 3: raft and sunset

Go out early on a bamboo raft along the Yulong River, which is calm, and then rest at the hotel. Our Yulong River guide explains how to pick a quieter hour. In the late afternoon, choose a viewpoint for sunset and arrive early to find a seat. The Xianggong Hill and Xingping note helps you decide between sunrise and sunset.

Day 4: a free day

Keep this day open. A car to Xingping, a long lunch or a spa afternoon all work. If you want a lively evening, West Street received over 21.1 million tourists in 2023[7], so it can be busy. Go early, eat, and walk back along a side lane.

Day 5: leave gently

Have a late breakfast and transfer to the airport with a buffer. The Guilin to Yangshuo transport guide compares the options.

How long are the travel legs?

The cruise day and the final transfer are the only long days. On Day 2, plan most of the day for the boat and the transfer, and book nothing hard for the afternoon. Keep your passport with you, because hotels copy it at check-in[8].

Where should you stay?

For a couple, the West Street versus countryside guide is the main decision. Countryside gives quiet and views, while West Street gives food and evening life. A good compromise is the edge of town, within a short taxi ride of both.

How can you adapt it?

  • Seniors travelling as a couple: skip viewpoint climbs and use the car.
  • Muslim travellers: Hui Muslims avoid pork[9]. Look for the green 清真 sign, and note that a Chinese halal label does not automatically meet Malaysian recognition, so check halal.gov.my.
  • Setting up payments: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover and Diners Club can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account[10]. Verification needs the passport name and a live selfie[11].
  • Wet weather: swap the raft day and the free day.

What should you book ahead?

Book the first and last hotel nights, the airport transfers and the cruise, and tell the hotel it is a honeymoon. Save the Consulate General of Malaysia in Nanning at +86 159 7778 3818, which is useful for Guangxi[12]. Price the trip with the budget planner, then compare it with the first-timers five-day plan.

What if one of you is more energetic?

It happens to couples all the time. Let the livelier partner take the early raft or the viewpoint, while the other sleeps in and meets you for lunch. You are on holiday together, not on a timetable.

Agree one thing each day that you both want, and let everything else stay optional.

Questions Malaysians ask

Is five days right for a honeymoon here?

It is a comfortable length. You get one night in Guilin and three in Yangshuo, with a river day, two lazy days and a morning to leave without rushing. If you can add a night, put it in Yangshuo, where the evenings are the most relaxed.

Where should we stay for a quiet, private feel?

Choose the Yangshuo countryside for views, quiet and room to breathe. Ask the hotel which rooms face the fields, how far the taxi ride into town is and whether dinner is available on site. Tell them it is a honeymoon in advance, but do not expect set perks.

Will our cards work for the two of us?

Visa, Mastercard and other major cards can be bound to Alipay and Weixin Pay without a Chinese bank account. Verification needs the passport name and a live selfie. Each of you should set up your own app at home, using the same name in both.
