Guilin, Longji Terraces and Yangshuo

You are chasing terraces, river and hills, and want mornings free for the light.

Six days gives you time to put the terraces first, the river second and Yangshuo last, with a quiet morning between each. The key choice is to sleep near the terraces for one night, so sunrise is a short walk instead of a long early drive.

If you photograph, this plan puts the best light at the start and end of the day and leaves the middle for rest.

Who is this plan for?

It suits photographers, scenery-lovers and anyone who prefers one big landscape to many small sights. It also suits couples who are happy to carry one small bag. If you want an easier trip, a plain Guilin and Yangshuo route leaves the terraces out.

What does the route look like?

  • Day 1: arrive in Guilin and rest
  • Day 2: transfer to the Longji terrace area, afternoon walk
  • Day 3: sunrise at the terraces, return to Guilin
  • Day 4: Li River to Yangshuo
  • Day 5: Yangshuo countryside and a viewpoint
  • Day 6: slow morning and fly

Guilin stands at about 153 m[1], so you arrive near sea level. The terraces sit higher and mornings are cooler, so pack a warm layer.

Day by day

Day 1: arrive and rest

Land at Guilin Liangjiang Airport, about 28 km southwest of the city centre[2]. Check in and keep your plans small. If you are packing a camera bag and tripod, check that everything fits in a taxi boot.

Day 2: up to the terraces

Leave your main luggage at the Guilin hotel and take one overnight bag. Plan most of the day for the transfer, since the road to the terrace area is slow. Check in, then walk the nearest paths in the afternoon light.

Our Longji region guide explains the villages and how to choose between them.

Day 3: sunrise and return

Rise early and walk to a viewpoint in the dark, with a torch. The terraces change through the farming year, so a flooded field may reflect the sky, while a green one gives texture. Go with the look you want in mind.

After breakfast, come down and return to Guilin. Keep the evening free to rest and sort your photographs.

Day 4: the river to Yangshuo

Take the Li River boat to Yangshuo. The Li is 164 km long, and the stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo is about 83 km[3]. Its scenery appears on the fifth series 20 yuan banknote[4]. Our Li River cruise guide explains which section to choose.

Day 5: countryside and a viewpoint

Spend the morning on a bamboo raft or by bicycle, then rest at midday. Read the Yulong River raft guide for the quietest times.

If you want a second sunrise, our Xianggong Hill guide covers viewpoints near Xingping. Otherwise sleep in and use the evening light.

Day 6: fly home

Keep the last morning calm. Leave for the airport early, because security queues can be long.

How long are the travel legs?

Two legs matter. The road to and from the terraces takes much of a day each way, and the river day takes most of another. Do not add other outings to those days.

Keep your passport within reach, because train tickets and platform gates need it[5]. If you carry a bike or tripod, remember that bicycles cannot go aboard high-speed trains[6].

Where should you stay?

Sleep in Guilin on arrival, then one night in the terrace area, back in Guilin, and finally two nights in Yangshuo. In Yangshuo, a countryside guesthouse gives early light, while West Street gives evening life. Our Guilin and Yangshuo region overview compares them by area.

How can you adapt it?

  • Shorter: skip Day 5 and go straight home from Yangshuo.
  • Seniors: stay in a guesthouse close to the main viewpoint and skip the dark walk.
  • Muslim travellers: look for the green 清真 sign, since the Hui avoid pork[7]. Village guesthouses may have limited choice, so bring snacks and check halal.gov.my for the status of any Chinese label.

What should you book ahead?

Book flights and the terrace night first. Malaysians can stay up to 30 days per stay without a visa under the exemption that took effect on 17 July 2025[8]. Confirm on the official source before travel.

Run your draft through the pace checker, and keep a copy of your village booking on your phone in Chinese. Price the trip in ringgit with the budget planner. See more plans in the itineraries hub.

Questions Malaysians ask

When do the Longji terraces look their best?

It depends on the farming calendar, because the terraces look different when flooded, green or golden. Decide which look you want before you fix dates, and ask your agent or the village guesthouse what stage the fields are at. Do not trust one brochure photo.

Do we have to stay overnight at Longji?

For sunrise and early light, yes. A day trip from Guilin means you arrive after the best light. One night in the terrace area also lets you walk between villages without the afternoon transfer rush.

How should we pack for the terraces?

Take one overnight bag and leave the rest at your Guilin hotel if the hotel will hold it. Rail luggage is officially 20 kg for adults, though bags are rarely weighed. Carry a rain jacket and shoes with grip.

Is this route suitable for parents?

Only if they are comfortable with uneven steps and a long drive. The terraces involve walking up and down paths. If a parent finds stairs hard, choose a viewpoint close to the road and keep the walking short.

What should we ask a package to include?

Ask for the Longji transfer, entry and the night in the terrace area, plus a clear return time. Ask whether shopping stops are included and whether you can skip them. A flexible morning matters more than an extra sight.
